Amazon Studios rolled out their first official trailer in fine form for Nash Edgerton’s new road action comedy, Gringo. David Oyewolo leads and teases a hilarious fish-out-of-water narrative for this one with actress Charlize Theron milking the heck out of another boss role alongside Joel Edgerton fetching his best American accent to date. Mild-mannered pharmaceutical company executive Harold Soyinka (David Oyelowo) takes a business trip from Chicago to Mexico with his cutthroat bosses Richard (Joel Edgerton) and Elaine (Charlize Theron). At the company’s Mexican lab, Richard orders manager Sanchez (Hernán Mendoza) to stop selling the bioengineered marijuana product Cannabax to a brutal, Beatles-loving cartel kingpin known as The Black Panther. Meanwhile, straight-arrow Harold learns he’ll be out of a job as soon as Richard and Elaine sell their newly cleaned-up company to a conglomerate. And when he turns to his wife Bonnie (Thandie Newton) back home for comfort, she confesses […]
High Rise helmer Ben Wheatley is already coming out strong from the Toronto premiere of his latest rousing, action-packed crime thriller, Free Fire. Bree Larson, off the heels of her newfound position as Captain Marvel for 2018, takes the lead next to actors Armie Hammer, Cillian Murphy, Sam Riley, Sharlto Copley, and a crapton of 70’s mustaches, and the obligatory bulletfare that naturally occurs in a room full of criminals…and guns! SYNOPSIS: Free Fire centers around an arms deal that goes spectacularly and explosively wrong. Justine (Larson) has brokered a meeting in a deserted warehouse between two Irishmen and a gang led by Vernon (Copley) and Ord (Hammer), who are selling them a stash of guns. But when shots are fired during the handover, complete pandemonium ensues, with everyone at the scene suddenly thrust into a heart-stopping game of survival. Now poised for screenings at Mayhem and October and following its […]
Henry is just an average guy… An average guy who was blown to pieces, rebuilt as a cyborg and now has to tear his way through Russia to save his wife from a telekinetic madman who looks and sounds like an albino Tommy Wiseau. Yup, perfectly normal guy with first world problems. What’s the Meaning of This? To the uninitiated (which is precisely NO ONE reading this review), Hardcore Henry is the crazy, feature length, first person action movie straight from the mind of director/cameraman/stunt wizard Ilya Naishuller. The film is the logical next step after his wildly popular music video “Bad Motherfucker” hit it big on YouTube with over 32 million views. The biggest question mark for this film is “can a viral YouTube video translate into an entertaining feature film?” The “Story” Even by action movie standards, Hardcore Henry’s plot is paper thin. The film has a pretty […]
It took about an hour but Wednesday night’s Twitch.tv stream finally made way for awaiting audiences to spy the newest trailer for director Ilya Naishuller’s new movie, Hardcore Henry. The film is already prone to acclaim among previous festiaval viewers with more to come following its forthcoming premiere in March at SXSW. That said and judging by the reactions so far, I think it’s fair to say this movie is about to sell the hell out of itself! SYNOPSIS: Strap in. Hardcore Henry is an original film that was shot completely from the hero’s perspective. You remember nothing. Mainly because you’ve just been brought back from the dead by your wife (Haley Bennett). She tells you that your name is Henry. Five minutes later, you are being shot at, your wife has been kidnapped, and you should probably go get her back. Who’s got her? His name’s Akan (Danila Kozlovsky); […]
Director Ilya Naishuller’s Hardcore Henry (formerly Hardcore) is poised to release on April 8, and STX Entertainment is promising a robust campaign to promote the film this Spring and Summer. For this, SXSW Film Festival attendees can expect to catch this one in March earlier on with the trailer premiering on February 10 with a new logo that Naishuller has brandished on Instagram which you can view below. Just finished mixing the new trailer. This one will be hitting cinemas so the sound must be absolutely killer, and with the team we got to work on it, the end result is?, as you can tell from my stupid grin. A photo posted by Ilya Naishuller (@naishuller) on Feb 6, 2016 at 11:04am PST As per an earlier press release, the trailer debut will launch on Twitch between 6-8 PM (PST) exclusively on summit1g’s Twitch channel (www.twitch.tv/summit1g). Naishuller will be on […]
Director Ilya Naishuller isn’t here to bullshit you. The popularity of his direction on Biting Elbow’s Bad Motherfucker music video has gone ridiculously viral in the last year or more, and its given him just the momentum he needed to film his latest first-person endeavor, Hardcore, centered on a resurrected robot who must rescue his wife/creator from an evil telekinetic with the help of actor Sharlto Copley. The film already has a teaser clip now making the rounds as of last year, offering an amazingly gruesome and awesomely brutal sample of the delightful that awaits, and no less muscled in further with Wanted helmer Timur Bekmambatov producing. Alas, there’s no need to take my word for it with tickets now available for Midnight Madness premiere next Friday at the Toronto International Film Festival, and the new poster along with Colin Geddes’s program notes pretty much do all the talking from […]
Admittedly, a film like director Neill Blomkamp‘s sci-fi epic, Chappie is something many of us have seen before, though in its visionary application, it appeals as one of the latest ambitious original ideas to set foot in the world of film. Moreover, the very addition of actor Sharlto Copley in the title role serves as a credit to the strengths shared between him and Blomkamp in their long friendship and partnership in film, and it shows in the recognition they’ve continually received in District 9 and Elysium just over a year ago. Blomkamp‘s vision for a sci-fi universe is one that works so well with a certain majesty in his scope that bodes well along the lines of other director favorites like Guillermo Del Toro or even Ridley Scott – the latter once servicing a potential chance to contribute to the Alien franchise. No, we probably won’t get to see […]
If not for the fact that District 9 and Elysium helmer, South Africa’s own Neill Blomkamp was the go-to-guy at one point earlier on for an Alien film, there’s a reason why filmgoers love him. Simply put, while the former title does outweigh the latter in some areas, he’s good at what he does, and clearly it shows. Alas when you look at his latest offering in the new sci-fi thriller, Chappie, of course you might be thinking Short Circuit by way of iRobot and Robocop, and you may be right, as well in for another possible cinematic treat! SYNOPSIS: Every child comes into the world full of promise, and none more so than Chappie: he is gifted, special, a prodigy. Like any child, Chappie will come under the influence of his surroundings – some good, some bad – and he will rely on his heart and soul to find […]
It’s been a year since producer Timur Bekmambetov (Wanted) officially announced production for what he and the crew are billing as “the world’s first ever POV sci-fi action movie”, titled Hardcore. It came at the height of popularity over director Ilya Naishuller‘s explosive viral music video sensation, “Bad Motherfucker”, which featured its own theme filled with first-person POV-style parkour and car chase sequences, fist fights and whimsical elements of science fiction to boot, ultimately garnering millions upon millions of views on YouTube and multiple sites. Well, we are a year and a half into waiting now, and with starring actor Sharlto Copley gaining timely traction for the upcoming release of Chappie, the team behind Hardcore are going public with a serious progress report in the form of a three-minute clip showcasing just what lies ahead for the film’s release. Mind you, what they were promising moviegoers was a feature-length thriller […]
Just two days away from the release of director Neill Blomkamp‘s latest action sci-fi adventure, Elysium, Machinima now has a new red-band clip from the Sony/Tristar release. The clip is literally an explosive look into what sci-fi fans can expect from Blomkamp’s latest work of art since debuting the unexpected 2009 sci-fi masterpiece, District 9, with childhood friend and lead actor, Sharlto Copley. Based on several TV spots and clips I have seen, I can already tell that Copley will have brought his A-game as he is truly turning into one of Hollywood’s most bankable actors of the new millenium as of late. This, in addition to starring opposite actor Matt Damon playing a bio-suited armor-wearing freedom fighter, and actress Jodie Foster playing an intergalactic dragonlady with her own space planet and the weapons necessary to destroy anything attempting to get close to it, are sure to make Elysium the […]
