Shinji Higuchi and Hideaki Anno did the fans some major justice with last year’s kaiju hit, Shin Ultraman. Japan loved it. Festival goers the world over loved it. I loved. Edward loved it. As of this July, though, it’ll be your turn to share the love as well, and Cleopatra Entertainment is here to remind us all exactly that with an official trailer to stir things up again. As Shin Ultraman begins, we learn the appearance of giant unidentified life forms known as “S-Class Species (Kaiju)” has become commonplace in Japan. The Japanese Government formed a Kaiju defense taskforce known as the SSSP, led by Kimio Tamura (played by Drive My Car’s Hidetoshi Nishijima). After a particularly challenging encounter, a silver giant descends from the sky to rescue the country. Dubbed Ultraman, this giant’s identity and purpose are a mystery. Shin Ultraman is a delightful reimagining of one of Japan’s […]
Shinji Higuchi’s Shin Ultraman has been hard at work in the past year, running the gamut with every major and minor news outlet and film reporting site since taking off in Japan last summer. The film has especially been a treat for both me and contributing writer Edward Orndorff during its festival run leading up to its limited theatrical run this week via Fathom Events, and is now on track for a Spring rollout including theatrical and VOD, followed by a Deluxe Home Entertainment Blu-Ray and DVD from Cleopatra Entertainment. Written by Hideaki Anno (Shin Godzilla) and directed by Shinji Higuchi (Shin Godzilla, Attack on Titan), the film stars Takumi Saitoh (Shin Godzilla, 13 Assassins), Hidetoshi Nishijima (Drive My Car, The Wind Rises), Masami Nagasawa (Before We Vanish, Mother), Daiki Arioka (Innocent Curse), and Akari Hayami (Gintama, Forget Me Not). As Shin Ultraman begins, we learn the appearance of giant […]
Consider this a fair reminder that next month will be a great time to catch Shin Ultraman on the big screen in the U.S. where and when available. Fathom Events is out and about as of Tuesday with the promo above featuring an intro from the man himself, Takumi Saito who headlines the film in the title role, and there’s more info at the official website if you’ve missed it somehow. Shinji Higuchi directed the pic from a script by Hideaki Anno. You’re welcome to spool through our own reviews from the film’s screening circuit this past summer courtesy of myself and contributor Edward Orndorff.
2022 has been a crucial year for moviegoers outside of the Far East and looking forward to catching Shinji Higuchi’s recent blockbuster hit Shin Ultraman, following its Japan release back in May. As of Monday, pat yourselves on the back for keeping up with the latest on the film’s movement with word via Leo Barraclough’s Variety exclusive that The Exchange has acquired sales rights for multiple territories on the pic and will sell to buyers this month at the 47th Toronto International Film Festival. Among the areas are North America, Europe, Latin America, Australia, and New Zealand, to name a few. Produced by Tsuburaya Productions, Toho and Khara, Shin Ultraman is the latest anniversarial revamp of the iconic Tsuburaya IP, 55 years since its creation now with Higuchi partnering once again with Hideaki Anno, who also penned the pic and served as one of the producers; The two previously collaborated […]
There’s a huge, extensive legacy to consider with the Ultraman franchise as it dates back to 1966, and the question of whether or not a studio can remake a classic property. As a Westerner, I can certainly speak for Hollywood’s intake of IPs whether homegrown or born abroad, and it’s been a rocky ride. With a film like Shin Ultraman, however, I can only ascertain its general success from its current box office reception following its theatrical Japan release back in May, and so to that end, I can only dive into this review as someone relatively new-ish to the franchise apart from my past consumption of Ameritoku and learning of its Super Sentai Origins and other Showa-era materials. Alas, we get Shin Ultraman, the latest reteam from Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi following their pairing on Anno’s Evangelion projects among others. For both Anno and Higuchi, Shin Ultraman stands […]
The hour is nearing as Japanese audiences await Shin Ultraman, the latest from legendary collaborators, Neon Genesis Evangelion‘s Hideaki Anno, and Shinji Higuchi in his follow up from 2016’s Shin Godzilla. Tickets are already on sale ahead of its release slated for May 13 and Toho has just launched a brand new trailer. An alien is out for justice and pursues a rogue criminal to a planet called Earth. To atone for his deeds he leaves the power and transforms a human into a hero for good and Earthly protection. Thus the Ultra Man is born as fashioned after the original early 1960s televisions serial that was on many Japanese households’ TVs. Takumi Saito (Re:Born, Fukushima 50) stars as the lead this time around with Masami Nagasawa and Hidetoshi Nishijima. Toho Pictures, Tsuburaya Productions, Khara Corporation, and Cine Bazar produced the pic which now bares the new theme song, M 87, by […]
It’s taken all of this year for things to finally align for Tsuburaya Productions and Toho as the two companies worked to further mitigate the hampering conditions of the on-going pandemic. Invariably though, Shin Ultraman is finally coming as announced on Monday during the Tsuburaya Convention 2021 special program with two pairs of updated posters and teasers – one of the latter which you can view above showcasing our titular hero. Slated for a May 13, 2022 release from Toho, Shin Ultraman is directed by Shinji Higuchi, in reunion with Shin Godzilla cohort, screenwriter Hideaki Anno who is also producing the pic via his Studio Khara banner following the film’s announcement several years ago. The film stars Takumi Saito (Kiba: The Fangs Of Fiction, Wotakoi: Love Is Hard For Otaku) as the human host for the Ultraman armor in this throwback incarnation to the original. Also starring are Masami Nagasawa, […]
As part of the Kamen Rider 50th Anniversary celebration earlier this year, a re-imagining/reboot of the beloved Showa Era Rider, Kamen Rider Black, was announced. Written by Izumi Takahashi (Tokyo Revengers) and Directed by Kazuya Shiraishi (The Blood of Wolves, Kyoaku), Kamen Rider Black Sun is currently set to debut in Spring of 2022. At an event held by Tamashi Nations, new details and photos have been shared, as well as cast announcement for our protagonist and antagonist. Kamen Rider Black Sun stars veteran actor Hidetoshi Nishijima as Kohtaro Minami, the man who becomes Kamen Rider Black Sun. Tomoya Nakamura plays Nokuhiko Akizuki, Kamen Rider Shadow Moon. Notably, Shadow Moon has never previously been given the title Kamen Rider. Along with these initial cast announcements, the first images of Kamen Rider Black Sun and his Rider Machine, Battle Hopper, were shared. Director Shiraishi said of the project: “The thought of being in […]
Currently on the heels of its 55th anniversary since birthing the character in the wheelhouse of Tsuburaya Productions, the newest teaser and poster art for Shin Ultraman is here marking the latest update for the franchise. The film hails from Tsuburaya and Toho, and is written by Hideaki Anno who is also producing the pic via his Studio Khara banner following the film’s announcement two years ago, and features none other than actor Takumi Saito (Kiba: The Fangs Of Fiction, Wotakoi: Love Is Hard For Otaku) as the human host for the Ultraman armor in this throwback incarnation to the original. Higuchi and Anno previously paired on Shin Godzilla which, for some, was still hit-or-miss – a hit especially for its adherence to a more practical, stylish presentation akin to its predecessors. Looks like Shin Ultraman aims for similar aspirations and the teaser certainly whets the appetite. Peep the teaser […]
Funimation is in our good graces this season after living up to its ends with the limited theatrical releases of Higuchi Shinji’s Attack On Titan two-parter last year. Alas, this Fall, the first of both films inspired by the original work of manga creator Isayama Hajime is finally making its way to a DVD/Blu-Ray release on October 4, and so they’ve unveiled a new trailer to accomodate. SYNOPSIS: When the Titans first attacked, life for mankind was forever changed. Fearing the massive man-eating humanoids, survivors constructed three enormous walls for protection. From that point on, humanity lived safely behind the walls”for the time being. A century later, life is peaceful. Eren and his friends live inside the walls, yearning to explore beyond the borders they’ve always known. But the opportunity comes sooner than expected when a Colossal Titan appears above the wall. With a single kick the barricade is pierced, […]
Thursday night saw some terrific announcements at Comic-Con International: San Diego from the good folks at Funimation. Their official website has a bit more information but if you live in North America and cult monster movie fare is your thing, look no further than the latest press release announcing Funimation Films’s acquisitions of Godzilla: Resurgence which opens in Japan from Toho later this year. The film is just one in several of the biggest moves made in the live-action department with Funimation having ultimately grown into a growing mecca of all things Otaku. Having invested in event-screenings releases like last year’s live-action adaptations of both parts of the Attack On Titan films as well as all three of the Rurouni Kenshin trilogy starting next month, the inclusion of the latest directorial pairing from Anno Hideaki and Higuchi Shinji – as ceremonious as the hype is in the last two years, […]
Gareth Edwards’s 2014 epic reboot of Godzilla may have fared well with some fans, but the mothership to which it belongs, Toho, his aiming for something that aspires greatly to pay homage to many the tropes that made it so memorable as of 1954. Thus, we get the stunning new Godzilla: Resurgence which roars next Friday in Japan cinemas, and with all the authenticity you could ask for in reviving such a property as grand as this one. SYNOPSIS: A cause unknown, an accident has occurred in the tunnels of the Tokyo Bay Aqua Line, causing an emergency cabinet meeting to convene. Immediately afterwards, a huge creature appears, destroying town after town with its landing reaching the capital. The mysterious giant organism named “Godzilla.” New TV spots and a second official trailer have been all the rave this week so far with the latter brandishing a vivacious and intense score […]
Hollywood’s knack for balls-to-the-wall blockbuster filmmaking notwithstanding, director Gareth Edwards’s 2014 reprisal of classic Toho mainstay for Warner Bros., Godzilla, didn’t bode well for all of its observers. Some loved it in its delivery and even enough to help grant it its upcoming sequel while others were critical and probably a few hated it. Fast foward to 2016 and through the past two years in which Toho announced it would not be outdone by Hollywood’s standards. No, no…Godzilla is their baby – a 389 foot-tall subterranean atomic fire-breathing creature baby with a bad temper and the will to use it! Thus, in the good name their brand hoisrs, it appears Toho has taken a much more organic approach for its own reboot with the forthcoming Godzilla: Resurgence from acclaimed writer and director Anno Hideaki Anno and SFX wiz, Higuchi Shinji. Hiroki Hasegawa, Takenouchi Yutaka Takenouchi and Ishihara Satomi star among […]
In case you’ve been living under a rock for the past year, just know that you’re not safe under that rock. Godzilla is returning on July 29, 2016 for the new film, Godzilla: Resurgence in Japan cinemas courtesy of Toho Company Ltd. and the density of said rock probably won’t matter. Visual effects whiz and filmmaker Higuchi Shinji, having gotten his feet fully wet with monster titles relevant to Gamera, the live-action Attack On Titan films and the like, and here and now with a script by Anno Hideaki that makes way for a Godzilla that aims to dwarf that of Legendary Pictures’s most recent Hollywood endeavors. That said, new teaser posters are now online as well as an official teaser which clearly takes its cues from other found-footage titles what with all the frenetic and chaotic shaky cam. No worries though, really, seeing as how there isn’t much to […]
Whatever is happening in Japan right now between filmmaker Higuchi Shinji and Rurouni Kenshin trilogy action director Kenji Tanigaki, it’s starting to draw some serious attention. Higuchi‘s most recent obligations have been to Toho’s forthcoming Shin Godzilla movie following his completed Attack On Titan twofers which are finally making headway in North America this season. Nowadays, it looks as if his attention has also been devoted to a brand new project called Voices. Music label Flying Dog unleashed a behind-the-scenes teaser for the project with footage showing up to fifty actors and stuntmen wired up and donning costumes by GANTZ’s own Takeda Dango, and performing feats of action amid a rock background, along with action-packed footage showcasing Takeda Rina, Mimoto Masanori, Joey, and Shimazu Kentaro. All this is pretty sudden but the footage is electrifying and energetic as all hell, and whatever happens, it appears to be happening sometime in […]
Director Higuchi Shinji’s latest thrilling action adventure epic, Attack On Titan, has a slew of releases for its two-part endeavor in North America following its announcements in August. With FUNimation now launching ticket sales for select days and dates in both late September and in October, there’s no question these may sell out. Alas, your best bet is to click here and get them while they’re hot! Oh, and we have a teaser. But yeah…tickets in the link (again) are available HERE.
The dates are finally set for the Fall releases of FUNimation’s latest acquisition, Attack On Titan. It’s not known if the current integral tie-in series being broadcast by Docomo for Japan viewers will get the same treatment, thought it’ll be worth waiting for considering how much fanfare is for this property. The films have multiple dates between limited theaters next month and in October, so check out the full details below in addition to the official U.S. trailer just beneath! FLOWER MOUND, TEXAS – August 14, 2015.
