All things New York Comic Con came to a head for RLJE Films and Shudder on Friday with the first official teaser release of Ash, the new dark sci-fi thriller from Grammy Award Winner and sophomore director Flying Lotus. The teaser trailer features appearances by Eiza González and Aaron Paul set against the perpetual, sprawling backdrop of interstellar wonderment and mystery, coupled with the signature thrills of actor Iko Uwais which ought to rightly give action fans something to look forward to in the new year. On the mysterious planet of Ash, Riya (González) awakens to find her crew slaughtered. When a man named Brion (Paul) arrives to rescue her, an ordeal of psychological and physical terror ensues while Riya and Brion must decide if they can trust one another to survive. Ash also stars Beulah Koale and Kate Elliott, and will feature an original score composed by Flying Lotus. […]
Being a big fan of Joe Begos’ last couple of films, I went excitedly into his newest. And the main thought I was struck by while watching “Christmas Bloody Christmas” is there was a Terminator movie released within the last few years and despite the fact that James Cameron himself was involved in making it, “Christmas Bloody Christmas” actually feels more like “The Terminator” by leaps and bounds. I recently was able to speak to Begos and when I mentioned that, he claimed “The Terminator” as his favorite movie and that is completely unsurprising to me after seeing this film. It’s a love letter to Cameron’s 1984 sci-fi classic in the same way Begos’ previous film, “VFW”, seemed a clear valentine to John Carpenter’s “Assault On Precinct 13.” “Christmas Bloody Christmas” is a beautiful mashup of horror and action cinema with an infusion of holiday cheer (and anxiety). When I […]
I live in northwest Indiana where, at this time of year, it is not uncommon to get a taste of three to four seasons in one day. We’ve changed our clocks back an hour and now it gets dark earlier in the evening and did I mention how cold it is? One way to combat the cold and dark is to lose oneself in a movie set in a beautiful, sunny, and warm paradise. It’s even more fun when the movie is a shark movie! Great White, an upcoming release from Shudder, starts as most shark movies do: a seemingly happy couple swimming in seemingly peaceful waters and conveniently far away from any other people and just when you’re pulled into the serenity of the scene, cue dramatic music, here comes a shark. Yes! After that thrilling opening, we meet two of the main characters: Charlie, a retired marine biologist, […]
I love monster movies and one of my favorite sub-categories of monster movies is shark movies. From the campy Sharknado films to the more recent ___, it is a tradition that my stepdad and I have to include shark movies in our viewing nights. And come November, thanks to Shudder, we will have a new one to watch. Great White, a Shudder exclusive, follows a group of tourists whose seaplane goes down. Miles from shore, they have to fight to survive when they realize that they are not alone in the water. Have you seen the trailer? A vacation in paradise interrupted by a freak accident, miles and miles of infested waters between them and safety, and so many shark teeth! So much yes. Written by Michael Boughen, Great White is the directorial debut of Martin Wilson. If the film is as good as the trailer looks, I am going […]
If you’re a fan of horror films, you probably have a subscription to Shudder. If you don’t already have one, this bit of news may make you want to get one: THE LAST DRIVE-IN WITH JOE BOB BRIGGS, a Shudder Original series, is set to return Friday, April 16th. Not only will fans get to see Joe Bob Briggs back in action, but he will have a special guest with him. Director, writer, producer, and actor Eli Roth. Roth is known for Cabin Fever, and Eli Roth’s History of Horror. Roth and Joe Bob will “geek out” over two horror classics. In case you aren’t familiar with the show, Briggs hosts double features and talks about their “merits, histories, and significance to genre cinema.” The third season will begin April 16th at 9pm ET/8c. If you don’t have a Shudder account, you have time to get one. Otherwise, the show […]
This past weekend we here at Film Combat Syndicate had the privilege of viewing several films that participated in the virtual film festival called Nightstream. The line-up was almost overwhelming; it was so hard to choose what I wanted to watch, but a handful of films made it to the top of my list. 32 MALASAÑA STREET, directed by Alberto Pintó was one of them. Set in 1976 the film follows a family that has been forced to leave the village and move to Madrid. They do not have a lot of money, so of course they don’t bother doing any research when they find an apartment with a low mortgage. What could go wrong? Mucho. That’s Spanish for a lot. Did I mention this movie is in Spanish? Don’t worry, though, while I loved practicing my listening, there are English subtitles. So what happens in the home? Something angry […]
Tak Sakaguchi, for all intents and purposes, is a national treasure to anyone who has watched his films and partaken in Asian film fandom in the last twenty years. Talk of retirement in 2013 which ultimately proceeded what was thought to be his final screen bow in Yuji Shimomura‘s hit movie, Re:Born, certainly more than contributed to the uncertainty of his presence in today’s field, and so with appearances thereafter in films like Takahiro Ishihara’s Red Blade, Shinsuke Sato’s Kingdom and Yuki Kobayashi’s Rise Of The Machine Girls, fan appreciation never wanes. It’s especially with a film like Re:Born that the ceremony with Tak’s current run is more than deserved. Among his stops, he toured the film with friend and partner Ota Takayuki while in Austin, Texas for the Iron Dragon TV Action Film Festival in 2017, with DVD and Blu-Ray releases well underway at home in Japan, as well […]
“Lovecraftian” and “cosmic” are just a couple of the adjectives I’ve seen used to describe the type of horror film that is The Beach House. How would I describe it? Weird, but watchable. Hear me out: Emily and Randall are a young couple (who, in my opinion, have grown apart but are forcing the relationship) and they decide that a retreat to Randall’s dad’s beach house will be just what their relationship needs. Once there, they meet an older couple, Mitch and Jane Turner, who are also using the beach house since they are friends with Randall’s dad. So what do you do in this situation? It wouldn’t be much of a movie if one couple opted to leave so they decide to go through a bunch of wine and when that runs out, they all partake in some edibles…and no, these aren’t just tasty treats. Here’s where things get […]
Jeffrey A. Brown’s The Beach House, has seen many a warm welcome from audiences at Brooklyn, Chattooga, Sitges, and the Strasborg European Fantastic Film Fest. The director’s own freshman festival rouser is now poised to premiere on AMC’s Shudder throughout North America, the UK & Ireland on July 9 The feature directorial debut for Brown, THE BEACH HOUSE is an indie apocalyptic sci-fi thriller that presents an alluring mix of scorching seaside imagery, claustrophobic isolation, mysterious contagion and gruesome body horror, with a breakout lead performance from Liberato. A hit on the festival circuit, and coming soon to streaming! “An atmospheric triumph from newcomer director Jeffrey A. Brown… A slick tale of invasion and destruction that’s both intimate and cosmically grand. The Beach House is both a loving throwback to monster pictures from yesteryear, but at the same time, it helps the genre evolve to new places.” – Daniel Kurland, […]
Tons of credit goes to any filmmaker who can take a genre and build off of it to create something like director Jeff Barnaby’s new horror thriller, Blood Quantum. The storytelling process usually teeters on the more formulaic end of these types of films, and that goes to the director’s ability to tell a story; the sweeping epic saga in all the shows and spin-offs that culminate AMC’s The Walking Dead universe, and even films like I Am Legend, World War Z or Train To Busan all have their frills and plusses on certain ends. Blood Quantum certainly has its message all the same, and with an enriching subject matter that coalesces multiple aspects of the ensuing drama within Barnaby’s distinctive and often thrilling and fun horror millieu. An ancient proverb precedes the opening credits with an eerie glimpse into the year 1981 at the Red Crow reservation. It doesn’t […]
Yuji Shimomura-directed thriller, Re:Born, has been the talk of many a fan for the longest time now, but the word is now that the film will stream on horror platform, Shudder, beginning November 7. Shimomura’s sophomore debut reunites the stunt performer, action director and coordinator with cult action star Tak Sakaguchi as both paved the way with many notable directors in the last twenty years for Japanese cult action cinema. Sakaguchi stars as Toshiro, an idyllic countryside store clerk whose past life as a clandestined special forces operative comes back to haunt him and the young girl in his care. What ensues is a rampaging tale of action-packed close quarters retribution with Toshiro laying waste as a one-man army against his old commander and his gorilla kill-squad. The film made the rounds on DVD and Blu-Ray in some form or another in Japan and the UK, and grew wider appeal […]
Three years in the making after the impression left by Turbo Killer, film duo “Seth Ickerman” is back and well on the way to several dozen festival premieres around the world for Blood Machines. The crowdfunded sci-fi thriller streamed its official trailer which you can view above. The goal now will be to oversee its release via Shudder following its announcement in June, with David Sandberg (Kung Fury) part of the team to exec produce, and featuring new music by Carpenter Brut. The film is poised to hit up L’Etrange on Saturday, September 14, prior to unleashing at Fantastic Fest which launches its fifteenth edition next week. The new trailer above is worth every ounce of hype you’ve seen, while the Fest’s own Noah Lee makes the proper case for its reception: Making a splash on the Internet in 2016, Seth Ickerman (the alias for the talented French duo of […]
Shinichiro Ueda’s rousing zombie comedy, One Cut Of The Dead, is heading for a series of one-night screenings in select cities beginning September 13 in New York and Los Angeles. Alas, U.S. horror brand Shudder, who acquired the film officially back in April, finally unveiled the trailer this week in what feels like a true moment of exhaling for moviegoers who’ve waited painfully in the last two years. While shooting a low-budget zombie film in an abandoned warehouse, the crew find themselves caught between actual zombies and a mad director who won’t stop rolling. If you think you know what happens next, think again. Filmmaker Shinichiro Ueda turns the film on its head more than once for one of the wildest, funniest, and most surprising zombie movies of all time. The brainchild of Koji Ishihashi’s Enbu Seminar, the film became a surprise hit in Japan in 2017 before earning more […]
If you plan on getting your hands on AMC’s Shudder app anytime soon and have a devout love for J-horror, just know that’s where you’ll be able to find Shinichiro Ueda’s One Cut Of The Dead with the horror streamer acquiring rights in the U.S.. Rights were also snagged in Australia and New Zealand according to Variety citing the deal between Shudder, and Adam Torel who negotiated the terms representing Koji Ichihashi whose Tokyo-based film school, Enbu Seminar, backed the horror comedy. ONE CUT OF THE DEAD opens in a run-down, abandoned warehouse where a film crew are making a zombie film…Yet, this is no ordinary warehouse. It’s been said that it’s the site of where military experiments took place…Out of nowhere, real zombies arrive and terrorize the crew! This may sound like a the plot of a clichéd zombie film, but One Cut of the Dead is something completely different! […]
As promised, an official trailer arrived for Kitamura Ryuhei’s latest survival horror, Downrange, which is exclusively premiering on Shudder on April 26. There’s not much else to it apart from bearing a different cut than the TIFF trailer from last year, but it doesn’t undercut the buzz it’s earned and needless to say, anyone with an affinity for cult thrillers knows who Kitamura is, and the thrills he brings to the screen. Six college students are carpooling cross-country when one of their tires blows out on a desolate stretch of country road. Getting out to fix the flat, they quickly discover that this was no accident. The tire was shot out. With their vehicle incapacitated, the group is pinned down and mercilessly attacked by an unseen assailant as they desperately attempt to find a way to escape. Bloody Disgusting presented the official trailer on Thursday and you can check it out below. […]
Hands down, it was the cult hit, Versus, that drew me to director Kitamura Ryuhei close to fifteen years ago. He’s been less prolific in recent memory whilst maintaining his career path between Japan and the U.S. and his latest contained suspense thriller, Downrange, continues forward this year in bolstering his international profile. The movie is now set to open exclusively on OTT VoD service, Shudder beginning April 26 per reports over at Quiet Earth and Horror Society. Joey O’Bryan (Fulltime Killer) pens the script that sees Kelly Connaire, Stephanie Pearson, Rod Hernandez-Farella, Anthony Kirlew, Alexa Yeames and Jason Tobias headline the harrowing tale of cross-country college carpoolers crippled by a flat tire on a middle-of-nowhere road, and incidentally trapped in the crosshairs of a deranged sniper with no way out. Kitamura has at least one other in the pipeline while I still remain hopelessly patient for a Versus sequel […]
Everly helmer Joe Lynch is back and in stellar fashion these days following the rave SXSW reviews stemming from his latest, Mayhem. The Steven Yuen-starring contained action horror adventure is finally readying a late 2017 release in North America followed by AMC’s streaming platform, Shudder early next year according to Variety. A dangerous virus, one that prevents the infected from controlling their inhibitions, is discovered in a corporate law building, the very same firm that recently cleared an infected man on murder charges. When a quarantine is issued and the building goes on lockdown, all hell breaks loose inside, while a disgruntled employee (Steven Yeun) and an irate client (Samara Weaving) must fight and even kill their way to the top to “have a word” with the corrupt executives who wronged them before time runs out. Award-wining shortfilm scribe, screenwriter Matias Caruso earns this as his debut feature with Steven […]
