Casting details are currently unknown apart from the returns of series regulars Kento Yamazaki and Tao Tsuchiya in their respective roles. The series also rejoins with Shinsuke Sato back in the chair to direct, based on Haro Aso’s hit Shogakukan manga publication about a listless gamer who gets mysteriously transported with select members of Tokyo’s population to a parallel universe where everyone must participate in a deadly segmented game of survival. Season one premiered in December 2020, followed by a second season in December 2022 which teases the Joker card at the end of the series. Yamazaki also stars in Sato’s live-action treatments of hit manga, Kingdom, which opened its third installment in Japan theaters in July, and is also on track for a fourth sequel. Sato’s […]

Netflix is further entrenching itself with some of Japan’s top creatives to bring stories to life with TBS Holdings Inc.’s live-action production brand, THE SEVEN, whose roster includes none other than Akira Morii who is a key name behind the production of several upcoming shows. Such title would be Alice In Borderland, which debuted a trio of first look stills over the summer and now has some new photos to share which you can view in the gallery above. Kento Yamazaki stars in the film along with Tao Tsuchiya in the series which is based on Haro Aso’s hit manga, and centers on a slacker who gets trapped in a death game dimension with no direct way out, except to play and survive each game. Instant Swamp and It’s Me, It’s Me director Satoshi Miki’s got a hell of a tease for you all out there lovin’ your monster moviefare and whatnot. There’s yet to be an English title but feel free to bookmark Daikaijyu no Atoshimatsu going forward as it stays the course for a 2022 release starring Ryosuke Yamada (Fullmetal Alchemist) and Tao Tsuchiya (Rurouni Kenshin saga). A co-prod between Shochiku and Toei, both actors play ex-fiancees to one-another – specialists in their field who are assigned to the charge of a monster that attacks Japan and suddenly dies, only to ensue the looming threat of the country’s collapse stemming from a potential gas explosion from where the monster’s carcass lays. The teaser above doesn’t reveal the full monster but there’s enough shots to get a few glimpses along with the poster below which reveals a little more about the stakes at hand. […]
Standing at eight episodes in total with close to an hour for each, it’s difficult to get past the need for a more brisk pace in dialogue and story delivery when it comes to episodic dramas. With Shinsuke Sato’s Alice In Borderland, it certainly helps that this one is an action-packed stimulant from a filmmaker credited for some of the most ample, worthwhile successes in action direction. From the first episode onward, manga author Haro Aso’s own titular work is the basis for this story as we meet Ryohei Arisu, (Kento Yamazaki), a gaming addict and overall slacker. When he’s not wasting away at the controls to the chagrin of his much more successful, albeit judgemental brother and father, he escapes from under their microscope to hang out with friends Karube and Chota. After getting chewed out by his family and thrown out, Arisu convenes with his friends at the […]
If you take away nothing else from the work of Bleach helmer Shinsuke Sato, take the fact that he nearly never disappoints when it comes to storytelling. His latest work, Alice in Borderland, looks to continue that legacy heading toward its December 10 stream date at 3:00 a.m. EST on Netflix, and we finally have an official trailer to show for it. Arisu—a listless, jobless and video-game-obsessed young man—suddenly finds himself in a strange, emptied-out version of Tokyo in which he and his friends must compete in dangerous games in order to survive. In this strange world, Arisu meets Usagi, a young woman who’s navigating the games alone. Together, they set out to unravel one mystery after another as they risk their lives and confront what it means to live. Sato ran point for all eight episodes, based on Haro Aso’s Shogakukan man publication. The film marks a reunion for […]
