ATTACK OF THE AJUMMA: Asian Aunties Set The Rules In Team Red Pro’s Fantastic Short

Stunt professional and action director Joseph Le (Everything Everywhere All At Once, “Ashoka”) remains a bookmark in who to watch going into the new year for me. In the time I’ve consumed his shortfilm work, he’s proven to be adept at telling stories beyond what’s up my alley, and his latest shortfilm project, Out Of Body, is proof of that fact. Lily seeks sexual liberation during an intimate date. But when she’s targeted by a malevolent vagrant’s spirit, her night turns into a battle for control over her own body, entwining desire, fear, and the supernatural. I’ve seen my share of long and shortform horror enough to know that these types of projects are about more than hype, gore, spectacle and jump scares. Le ekes out a little bit of these too, but with a crucial caveat in this instance with a message pertinent to things like consent and boundaries. It’s […]
Given all the spur-of-the-moment horror musings I sometimes stumble upon, it wouldn’t be right of me to pass up Out Of Body, the latest from Team Red Pro and director Joseph Le who regularly pops in on this website as a standout action choreographer in the stunt arena. His credits partly include Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Knights Of The Zodiac, and Disney+ series “Ashoka”. Billed as “a trippy sensual horror,” and taking inspiration from thrillers like X and It Follows, Out Of Body stars Lestonja Diaz, Curtis Lum, and Alexya Garcia from a script by Ryan Kim, and centers on a sheltered woman whose date turns into a surreal battle against a malevolent entity. The official trailer circulating this week certainly lends some scintillating and equally chilling visuals hinting at just how all this entails, and more importantly are Le’s motivations […]
If 2021 is perceived as a hallmark moment for Asian representation for film, 2022 certainly feels like a continuation, if not an augmentation of that progress. One purveyor that stands to gain from the current momentum happening in films of late is Joseph Le, six years into his craft under the Team Red Pro independent film label and having networked enough to gain traction for his own career and now sharing the revels with a lot of his own colleagues within the stunt and independent film community. In addition to his own work, he’s also worked with creators like Leroy Nguyen, Aaron Toney and Vlad Rimburg, as well as for a short time on the late Monty Oum’s hit series RWBY, and his resumè has only grown phenomenally with at least three major films productions so far. Best of all is Le gets to share space with friends like Brian […]
Actor and filmmaker Joseph Le is already less than a week away from collaborating on another crowdfunded project, and in light of this, he’s kicking things off with the online release of his latest shortfilm, Twisting Tiger. Le directs from a script by Nick Hoang, with an inspired kung fu drama based on the true stories of its cast, including actor, stunt performer and Shaolin Kung Fu disciple Tarrell Kota Bullock, who’s done several shortfilm projects and even performed for Cirque du Soleil from 2019 through 2020. The project also marks Bullock’s second collaboration with Le since 2019’s “Afro Samurai Champloo”. Bullock plays T, a former gangster coping with PTSD while living sworn to a vow of non-violence, as he’s confronted by the violent and harrowing realities of life in the hood when one of his students is compelled to do the unthinkable in an effort to show strength against […]
Stunt professional Joseph Le hasn’t backed down from his own directorial ambitions, having etched himself a place in history with works hailing from production banners Turtle Wave and Team Red Pro over the years. Point in fact, and having since embarked on a career trajectory that’s taken him to the sets of Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend Of The Ten Rings, Daniels’ pending SXSW premiere Everything Everywhere All At Once, and 2023’s Saint Seiya: Knights Of The Zodiac, Le’s been keeping up the habit with the most recent completion of his new upcoming kung fu crime drama, Twisting Tiger. After committing to a life of zen, a Black Shaolin Disciple with PTSD must break his vow of nonviolence and save his students from a bloodthirsty Asian gang. The project ran a crowdsourcing campaign last year as cameras rolled and the plan is now to take the half-hour shortfilm to festivals […]
The Hit List has taken a pretty interesting turn of late now that I actually get to host some video files on behalf of creators. It’s a blessing and I’m real thankful to those of you investing in my own YouTube channel to share your craft. You’ll see a bit of that later, while we begin with the usual raft of demo reels from some of today’s top and emerging talent in stunts and action performance. Up first is someone who rightly deserves the proliferation he’s gotten since throwing down in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Mission: Impossible – Fallout. His name is Liang Yang and his reel is up first followed by reels featuring Aaron D. Alexander, Jennifer Mitchell, Diego Ramiro, Eric C. Sun, Taylor Krasne, Danny Rivera, A.J. Gagliardi, Lauren Nguyen, Ben Tardif, Patrick Dunham, Bronte Coluccio, Jon Beal, Daniel Pera, Michelle Fisichella, Phillip Wainwright, Oliver Gough, […]

Well, at least YouTube made progress in fixing its search functions, so I can look for videos more optimally again. Despite this, however, I’m still sticking to a bi-weekly format after this while trying to find other ways to present content for readers. That’s not an April Fools’ jab by the way. For now, we kick things off with the latest stunt reel via Vimeo from stunt performer Alexandre Huynh, followed by a playlist with demo, training and performance reels from some of today’s top and up-and-coming players in the field: Alaina Dugas-Matias, David Armstrong, Toni Jean Erasmus, Jonathan King, Gabby Perrea, Craig Putnam, Linn Solem, Jacob Wolf, Aristoteli Zherdi, Sher Juraev, Mami Speede, Alex Mills, Haley Jackson, Craig Canning, Marina Volkova, Matt de Souza, Miguel-Andres Garcia, Steve Schreiver and Jesse Rowles, with a reel from stunt coordinator Christopher Cordell, and Vlad Rimburg on a high note with a festive […]

Managing to keep myself busy with a few things into January, I’ve also come to the realization of how drab post-birthday 2019 is, to be honest. So, I really hoping things turn upward from here on. Season 2 of The Punisher is pretty damn cool too. Hong Kong cinema legends are the hello-and-good-evening for your enjoyment in all things pertinent to this week’s new installment of The Hit List with an energizing fan tribute to Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao. The playlist continues with the soothing sounds enlisted for the high-flying visuals of Melanie Peyton-Smith, followed by John Nania, Eric Nieto, Mickey Facchinello, Taz Garcia, Mykola Galagan, Emily Tung, Tyler Street, Sain Ferhad, Heidi Schnappauf, Brea Schneider, Craig Putman, Marvin Ross, Georgie Blackwell, Alex De Lorei, Paul Wilk, Vanessa Cater, Scott Hoffman, Joseph Spano and Becca Buckalew, and a quartet of reels highlighting exciting stunt, fight design and coordinator work […]
I had a busy weekend, frankly. No time really to BS or lounge about but for all good reasons… but that’s for another post. Indeed your time is now here as the newest installment of The Hit List goes live, kicking off with a Vimeo-only post of actor Marc Natoli’s latest demo reel, inclusive with snippets from his winning shortfilm debut last year, The Proposal. Following that is a welcome playlist fresh with today’s burgeoning and top martial arts and stunt talent, and we begin with an official team reel featuring a band of martial arts athletes I began covering last montj before I went into my holiday cave. Enter Team AKA with all its members front and center cut to the bone with high-energy music and cinematography and you can learn more about this group at akakarate.com. The playlist rounds out with some of the best and rising in […]
Well… this is it. It’s been another incredible year for The Hit List and being able to explore some filmmakers beyond what they shoot. There’s still plenty exploring left to be done as I hope to do something a bit more ceremonial by next year and maybe with a little help and some luck, I’ll be able to accomplish it. Alas, we’ve reached the final Hit List for 2018 and we’re gonna cut to the chase here starting with a raft of stunt and action demos from some of today’s talented members and up-and-comers of the stunt industry, and relative althletes therein. We begin with a kinetic extensive overture from Quan Minh Le, followed by the latest stunt and training reels from Matt Esof, Angela Jordan, Mykola Galagan, Vikrant Kumar Kalania, Jared Kirby, Marian Sing, Bobby Hernandez, Jimmy Davidson, Javi Cornelio, Bridgette Bentley, Olivia Fowler-Courtney, and choreography reels by Anthony […]
Just shortly after announcing their newest ten-dollar ‘Thank You’ campaign on Kickstarter, the team at Art School Dropouts found themselves in lucrative straits as their crowdfunding platform accrued more than enough funds to throw a pizza party for a cast-and-crew screening and commentary for their feature film debut. This brings us to the official trailer now online for Yes, Auntie!: My Asian Auntie Season 2, produced and directed by in-house creatives Joey Min and Stephanie Pham who also star in the film. The plan is to the release the film in serial format just as they did with the first season in 2016 – only now they’ve amassed enough materials to weave together a feature-length format, marking a debut milestone for the team since the birth of ASDO in 2009, and prior to its affirmation just a few years ago. For this and for as long as I’ve been following […]
