Cambodian cinemas are only a few days away from the release of Jimmy Henderson’s newest effort, KTV: Killing Time Violently. The film marks another successive entry in the action arena for director Jimmy Henderson, who has become more prominently known in the last several years for placing Cambodia squarely on the radar for a string of stylish beat ’em up thrillers. This includes especially 2017’s Fantasia Festival crowdpleaser, Jailbreak, which became a banner success on Netflix before the streamer’s removal of the film from its catalogue back in May. The film, which featured actor and martial arts duo Jean-Paul Ly and Dara Our as members of tactical unit trapped in a prison and forced to fight for their lives when a prisoner transfer goes awry. “Jailbreak definitely helped me to get my name out there and I am grateful for what it has done for the industry in Cambodia,” says […]
By 2013, French-born Chinese/Cambodian martial artist Jean-Paul Ly was well on his way into a fledgling career in stuntwork after moving to the U.K., although his primary trajectory aimed more toward becoming an actor. It’s a move that couldn’t have been more opportune for Ly whose own growth and progress ultimately found him in good straits with emerging talent out of Cambodia where then-screenwriter Jimmy Henderson and journeying up-and-comer Loy Te were already stirring some fruitful comradery of their own. Thus, with the contribution of the work experience brought on by Henderson’s directorial debut, Hanuman, and the entrance of local actor and martial artist Dara Our, and the proverbial open swing of the door for culminating talent comes action comedy Jailbreak, an abiding and much more commercial opportunity for Cambodian cinema, and incidentally, production company, Kongchak Pictures and Puprom Entertainment. The concept itself arose in earlier teaser posters with a […]
The campaign is in full swing for director Jimmy Henderson’s new movie, Jailbreak. The most recent teaser offered a meaty whiff of the exciting action to come while the rewarding factor of this latest affair stems from the coming onslaught of screenfighting talent straight from Cambodia and abroad. Lead actor Dara Our sure proved himself in this regard with Henderson’s Hanuman a few years ago, as has UK actor and martial artist Jean-Paul Ly following a number of action credits such as Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist, Scott Derrickson’s Doctor Strange and hit TV series, Cuckoo. Thus, challenging as it is to snag an opportunity to stand out more prominently in leading film roles past stunt performance, it always helps that there are filmmakers who recognize talent and potential when they see it. Jailbreak isn’t the first example of this and rest assured, it won’t be the last. SYNOPSIS: A group […]
Four years in writing here at my blog have seen quite a bit of upscaling for many people that I’ve covered. English martial artist and stuntman Jean-Paul Ly is certainly someone I haven’t left out of my purview in the time since he welcomed me into his social circle, and especially as rewarding as it continues to be through his progression as a stunt and fight coordinator and actor with several credits including Lucy, Jon M. Chu’s Now You See Me 2, TV drama Cuckoo, and Colin Emerson’s 2015 action short, Dead End. He’s got a few other roles now upcoming aside from that of what now looks to be another major step forward for the Cambodian film industry by way of filmmaker Jimmy Henderson with the new action comedy, Jailbreak from Puprom Entertainment and Kongchak Pictures. Ly joins Henderson’s Hanuman (2015) cast – Bokator exponent Dara Ours and actor […]
