THE EIGHT HUNDRED: Guan Hu Brings The Battle To UK Homes This Spring

Despite suffering the elongated woes of stifling film festival politics and Chinese censors a few years ago, Guan Hu’s most recent war epic, The Eight Hundred, finally managed to get a theatrical release to blockbuster fruition, albeit shorter in duration then. The film also scored releases overseas with CMC Pictures taking U.S. territory, and for this, folks in the U.K. can themselves make way for a physical rollout this Spring courtesy of Trinity CineAsia. While filmmaker Guan Hu’s latest, The Eight Hundred, wasn’t the only film that suffered sociopolitically-driven obscurity at the hands of Chinese censors last year, it definitely endured more than its fair share of obscurity. With the suprise cancellation of both its Shanghai International Film Fest premiere and a summer screening window, all was up in the air with no one the wiser as to the fate of its release, and the emergence of Covid-19 definitely didn’t ease things any. Thankfully, Hu’s ambitious Sino-Japanese blockbuster war epic was finally granted an August 21 release as of a week ago. Mr. Six helmer Guan Hu’s recent follow-up, The Eight Hundred, had a great sales show at Cannes for Huayi Bros. CMC Pictures took on the explosive WWII epic to release in the U.S., Australia and New Zealand and will likely coincide with the film’s mainland Chinese release slated for July 5.
