THE LAST DUEL Official Trailer Rages Online

Barring any dispositions you might have about Hollywood’s latest stab at English-language period epics set in, say, France, the latest trailer for Ridley Scott’s The Last Duel has a little meat on its medieval bones as seen in the first official trailer out of 21st Century Studios. Swordplay drama with a dash of crime and controversy and jabs of patriarchy and theocratic rule certainly set the pace here some. An adaptation of Eric Jager’s own 2004 novel, The Last Duel takes place in 14th century France and centers its dark and violent tale on Norman knight Jean de Carrouges, who returns from war and learns his wife, Marguerite de Carrouges, has been raped by former friend, squire Jacques Le Gris, who denies the allegations. THE LAST DUEL: Ridley Scott To Direct 14th Century Revenge Novel Adaptation, Affleck And Damon To Star

Mike Fleming Jr. is reporting at Deadline with an exclusive on director Ridley Scott’s latest efforts to fast-track an adaptation of Eric Jager’s 2004 novel, “The Last Duel: A True Story of Trial by Combat in Medieval France”. The film will be titled The Last Duel, which Scott will also produce at Scott Free with partner Kevin Walsh. Actors Matt Damon and Ben Affleck will star, and are producing via their Pearl Street banner, as well as writing the script with Nicole Holofcener. Francis Lawrence who directed the latter three installations of Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games saga is set to direct Studio 8’s new biographical period medieval thriller, The Last Duel, according to Deadline. Author Eric Jager wrote the 2004 publication on which the film will be based, and this week, reports show that Snowtown scribe Shaun Grant has been tapped to script the movie. There’s no official plot summary, so here’s a description from Penguin Random House that offers much more depth of what’s to come: In 1386, a few days after Christmas, a huge crowd gathers at a Parisian monastery to witness what will become the nation’s final “trial by combat”—a court-ordered duel intended to let God determine which of the two men was telling the truth.
