Pun intended or not, it’s high time that the kung fu cinema crowd had another stake in the game and for this, we turn to actor Daniel Rocha who leads the way in The Smoke Master, from directors Augusto Soares and Andre Sigwalt. The Brazilian production has finally run its course at festivals and will soon see a domestic release beginning May 18, a long-awaited milestone for the directing duo who toiled away at creating something subversive, bold and new, and for all intents and purposes, an enjoyable martial arts comedy for all. My thoughts on the film can be found here for good measure. Eight years of development and cultural edification, instilled enough to produce an independent kung fu feature that transcends the boundaries of comedy for a market not usually keen on controversy, now brings us to the forefront of the latest directing effort by debut film duo Augusto Soares and Andre Sigwalt with stoner martial arts romp, The Smoke Master. For this, we are invited to watch as an age-old vendetta begins to take shape for Daniel, (Thiago Stechinni) and his younger brother, Gabriel (Daniel Rocha) – prospective students of their surrogate father, Abel (Cleber Colombo) who is a Bagua Zhang master. The two routinely train together with other students at their local park where they are soon accosted by two thugs, and the harrassment only escalates further, until one day they brutally attack a classmate. The incident resulted in a near-fatal confrontation with the gang’s muscle bound leader, Caine (Tristan Aronovich), […]

• Not too far off from making headway with prison drama Branded, and with Isaac Florentine’s Hounds Of War, actor Frank Grillo has more film news in the pipeline of late with Independent Entertaiment launching sales for the Fall shoot of Brad Anderson’s The Dagon – about a family who must confront terrifying, deadly creatures that surround them every night when the daughter comes of age. Independent and CAA are co-repping North American rights. The actor is also in tow with writer/director Justin Price’s Hard Matter with Tyrese Gibson and Harvey Keitel for The Exchange. The film is set in a version of America divided by quadrants, where a power-hungry corporation takes control of the prison system and criminals as the new law enforcers inflict capital punishment to reclaim their place in society. (Variety, Screendaily) • Speaking of Grillo and following our December 2020 report, director Liam O’Donnell is expected […]
Freshman filmmaker Augusto Soares has teamed up on his first filmmaking venture with noted cinematographer André Sigwalt sharing the helm to bring us their newest independent outing, The Smoke Master, starring Daniel Rocha (The Fall, There’s Something About Mario) and Thiago Stechinni (Skull: The Mask). Penned by Soares and Sigwalt, the film focuses on a tri-generational vendetta by the Chinese mafia, one that now stares down on the fates of brothers Daniel (Stechinni) and Gabriel (Rocha). Upon Daniel’s 27th birthday, the two must journey to the far reaches of China in search of a kung fu master who can teach one of the brothers the ancient secrets of Tao Lu da Fumaça, a cannibis-based fighting style, in order to defend himself against their assassins on equal terms. Fusing kung fu cinema with stoner comedy tropes of the early 2000s, the film is partly billed as a humble nod to Jackie […]
