Macon Blair’s The Toxic Avenger revamp was another film I couldn’t catch along with the rest of the crowd at the eighteenth edition Fantastic Fest, and not for lack of trying. Word is though that the film’s level of violence and gore was inhabitable for distributors which is why some folks felt like they were taking crazy pills knowing full well at one point that a new movie was getting (or already) made. As of late, the film has a 92% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. What’s more is Cineverse has swooped in on the famed Troma property which Blair directed, and stars Emmy and Golden Globe winner Peter Dinklage in the title role for an unrated wide release premiere later this year. The banner has all U.S. and Canadian theatrical, home entertainment, and streaming rights through a deal with Legendary Entertainment, which all but guarantees that “Toxie” himself shall […]

Are you ready for more of The Toxic Avenger? Then look no further than Legendary Entertainment as they’ve just acquired the feature film rights for the cult-classic franchise that once flew the flag for low-budget indie horror banner, Troma. Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz directed the original 1984 film set in Tromaville, New Jersey, and follows Melvin, a mild-mannered nerd who is consistently bullied and picked on until he falls into a fat of toxic waste. He soon turns into the repulsive-yet-lovable mutant hero, Toxie, who stands up to bullies and corruption with irreverent zeal – doing good and brutally mauling evil in no-holds-barred fashion. Opening to a tame reception in 1984, the film eventually became a cult success a year after its release, preceding several sequels in 1989 and 2000. The Toxic Avenger also expanded into a stage musical production, a children’s cartoon TV series, and a Marvel Comic. […]
Back in May it was reported that action star Arnold Schwarzenegger would be appearing in the currently developing theatrical reboot of The Toxic Avenger, from director Steve Pink. The revision of the 1980’s undergrond cult cinema classic would have seen Schwarzenegger take on the role of “The Exterminator”, a character who trains the grotesque looking hero to use his powers for good. On Friday however, blockbuster movie fan site Expendables Premiere forwarded an updated conversation from WeGotThisCovered.com detailing some interesting dialogue regarding Schwarzenegger‘s newly publicized departure, as depicted in the following exchange: “WGTC: I love that Arnold Schwarzenegger has committed to [The Toxic Avenger] remake and wants to be in it… Lloyd Kaufman: Well no, he unsigned. He signed and apparently unsigned. I’m not sure what went down, I’m not really privi’ed, but yes, it was announced in every newspaper, there are photos of Arnold Schwarzenegger holding up a poster of The […]
