A ten-episode live-action rendition of One Piece found a new home at Netflix on Wednesday according to trade news and a press announcement from the streamer. The news comes following word that broke in July of 2017 that a live-action series was in the works from Shueisha, and Marty Adelstein’s Tomorrow Studios, the same company involved with the current serial production of Cowboy Bebop – also for the streamer. A multitude of adventures outline One Piece which took off as a hit manga beginning in 1997. The franchise expanded itself greatly into television and original video animes with its story centered on Monkey D. Luffy and his epic, action-packed and sprawling quest to find said ‘piece’ and claim the title of “King Of The Pirates”. The manga has sold over 460 million copies in its nearing 23-year history, birthed from author/creator Eiichiro Oda who took to Twitter for a statement […]
It’s been ages since talk began of a live-action Cowboy Bebop feature adaptation, and just a few years and change as those efforts evolved into TV with Netflix acquiring the rights last November. Now we have a quartet of casting announcements from Variety with John Cho (Star Trek reboot trilogy) leading the way as Spike Spiegel. The actor will be joined by Mustafa Shakir (Brawl In Cell Block 99, Luke Cage: Season Two) for the role of Jet Black along with Daniella Pineda (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom) as Faye Valentine, and Alex Hassell (The Bisexual, upcoming Amazon series The Boys) in the role of Spike Spiegel’s archnemesis and the Syndicate’s most formidable hitman, Vicious. Based on Cain Kuga’s Kadokawa Shoten manga and Shinichiro Watanabe hit anime series from Sunrise Inc., Cowboy Bebop is the jazz-inspired, genre-bending action sci-fi tale of Spike Spiegel, Jet Black, Faye Valentine and Radical Ed: a […]
Following the news of a live-action Cowboy Bebop series last June, the word is out as Netflix just announced its acquisition via press release late Tuesday. Netflix will handle physical production and co-produce with Marty Adelstein’s shared Tomorrow Studios shingle with ITV Studios’. Based on Kuga Cain’s Kadokawa Shoten manga and Watanabe Shinichiro’s hit anime series from Sunrise Inc., Cowboy Bebop is the jazz-inspired, genre-bending story of Spike Spiegel, Jet Black, Faye Valentine and Radical Ed: a rag-tag crew of bounty hunters on the run from their pasts as they hunt down the solar system’s most dangerous criminals. They’ll even save the world…for the right price. Watanabe himself is serving as a consultant on the ten-episode space saga, the first of which screenwriter Christopher Yost (Thor: The Dark World, Thor: Ragnarok) will put to pen. Yost is also exec producing next to Andre Nemec, Josh Appelbaum, Jeff Pinkner and Scott […]
It was a little over a year ago that a Japanese live-action adaptation of manga author Oda Eiichiro’s longstanding Shueisha Inc. publication and anime IP, One Piece, was announced for its own live-action movie. I’m not certain if that project is still moving forward but I’ll be sure to spread the word if I hear anything else, although considering recent movement over at Marty Adelstein’s Tomorrow Studios, I reckon it won’t be any time soon. The word now is that Oda, Shuesha Inc. and the studio are partnering for a live-action television drama instead, in news as reported over at Japan Times in the wake of the manga’s twentieth anniversary celebration. The manga itself took off in 1997 and has expanded itself greatly into television and original video animes with its story centered on Monkey D. Luffy and his epic, action-packed and sprawling quest to find said ‘piece’ and claim […]

It’s a good week this week if you’re name is Bong Joon-Ho. The director’s most recent project, Okja, has just partnered with Netflix and Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment banner ahead of its 2017 release and marks the beginning of a new spurt of progress in the wake of his hit sci-fi success story, Snowpiercer. Incidentally, it turns out that Marty Adelstein’s Tomorrow Studios are optioning the rights to the film as they now see potential for a series according to THR. Sarah Connor Chronicles scribe Josh Friedman has been tapped the hopeful series based on the 2013 movie and its literary predecessor, “Le Transperceneige”, in which an apocalyptic Ice Age takes over Earth, forcing the remainder of mankind to survive on a train that encircles the world where class warfare ultimately erupts in a hail of bullets and blunt objects.
