Filmmaker Travis Knight’s LAIKA, the studio behind Academy Award-nominated animated films such as Coraline, ParaNorman, The Boxtrolls, Kubo and the Two Strings and Missing Link, is expanding into live-action with Seventeen, after securing the rights in an intense bidding war on Wednesday. The project is based on the upcoming novel by acclaimed screenwriter John Brownlow (The Minaturist, Sylvia). “For the past 15 years, LAIKA has been committed to making movies that matter,” says Knight, LAIKA President & CEO. “Across mediums and genres, our studio has fused art, craft, and technology in service of bold, distinctive, and enduring stories. With Seventeen, LAIKA is taking that philosophy in an exciting new direction.” “Seventeen is a stiff cocktail of wicked wit, exhilarating action, and raw emotion,” Knight continues. “John has such a wonderfully unique voice. He’s crafted a brilliant universe with its own powerful identity. Seventeen is a thriller with soul, a sinuous […]
I don’t normally listen to a lot of contemporary popular music, but I like what Hailee Steinfeld’s latest audible with “Back To Life” is doing for Paramount’s latest, Bumblebee, from director Travis Knight. Knight’s Kubo And The Two Strings was a fun little adventure and so I’m keen on believing he might help bring the Transformers franchise from entropy with the new sci-fi thriller, and a good soundtrack also helps. This was a catchy listen. Peep it, and then go see Bumblebee this Christmas! On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug. Music video by Hailee Steinfeld performing Back To Life (from […]
Stop-motion virtuoso Travis Knight may not have gotten the audience he deserved for his freshman debut, Kubo And The Two Strings. His latest stint at the helm for Paramount’s latest Hasbro work-around with Transformers prequel take, Bumblebee, however, may bode as a worthy rebound for the director in wake of its tease on Sunday. The official trailer that arrived thereafter is now here for the taking, and you can’t deny it’s got some appeal to it. The design and look of our alien robot characters look a little more friendlier on the eyes this time compared to what most of us have infofar seen in Michael Bay’s applications for the live-action franchise. We also see a little more of Cybertron this time around (which could have – and probably should have – been a whole movie of its own from the get-go), in addition to the return of Peter Cullen’s […]
Anthony Breznican at Entertainment Weekly is running his latest exclusive for Travis Knight’s upcoming Hasbro treatment, Bumblebee. The photo above marks the first reveal of two Decepticon characters in the form of Shatter, a cherry-red Plymouth Satellite (voiced by Black Panther co-star Angela Bassett), and Dropkick, a blue AMC Javelin, (voiced by Justin Theroux). Knight spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the characters and their respective personalities: “When the cast is too big, and you have a finite amount of time, there’s only so much you can do to create an investment in them,” Knight […]
The Transformers film series has seen its share of both good times and bad. Apart from reviews, the franchise had been a box office hit for all four Michael Bay-directed films up until last year’s Transformers: The Last Knight which saw earnings take a dip. Nowadays, things are in a bit of flux with a sixth linear film removed from its 2019 date while Hasbro revamps its film agenda with other lucrative IP. However, the franchise, centered on alien autonomous robotic warriors now brings its focus to the center of a new prequel with Bumblebee starring Hailee Steinfeld and John Cena. The film is directed by Travis Knight who dealt quite the serving of cake to anyone who doubted his LAIKA-produced animated adventure, Kubo And The Two Strings. Bumblebee marks his big screen rebound with the coming-of-age story of Charlie, on the eve of her 18th birthday in 1987 in […]
Wrestler John Cena’s 2006 feature film debut, The Marine, wasn’t a huge favorite but I frankly enjoyed it as much as I wish his film career didn’t taper off from blockbuster movies after 12 Rounds in 2009. Fast forward to 2017 and while netizens have run wild with memes cheering Cena’s celebrity, there’s no question that his on-screen charisma is totally there, and so it’s nice to see him relevant this year with his recent supporting role in Doug Liman’s The Wall, as well as this week regarding all things Transformers as of late. Speaking of, I haven’t seen The Last Knight yet and probably won’t for a while…eventually. Alas, filming reportedly began. in Southern California on Monday for the production of Kubo And The Two Strings helmer Travis Knight’s latest, Bumblebee. The new movie spins off from filmmaker Michael Bay’s current Transformers pentalogy, joining Cena with a cast that now […]
Director Travis Knight’s Kubo And The Two Strings may not have performed hugely last year, but there’s no question that he’s gained some critical notoriety making him pretty essential to hire at the helm. With this in mind, Paramount has apparently taken to this effort in the wake of its writers’ room developments with a Bumblebee spin-off amid its Transformers film slate with said film releasing on June 8, 2018. That film comes just shy of a year following the upcoming June 23 release of Michael Bay’s Transformers: The Last Knight in which we first see title supporting character back on screen with his ensemble Autobots since Transformers: Age Of Extinction in 2014. For this, reports have confirmed Knight’s attachment to direct Bumblebee from a script by Christina Hodson and Lorenzo Di Bonaventura, Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg producing. The film marks Knight’s live-action debut following years of film and […]

Director Travis Knight is back and making the rounds once more ahead of the release of his newest film, Kubo And The Two Strings. Stop-motion animation isn’t something that we see everyday and with this being Knight’s specialty over at animation studio, Laika, his latest endeavor looks something quite interesting and fun, and Charlize Theron’s role here is one that bears the most charm, personally.
