Nope, I don’t live in Australia or New Zealand, but I am here to help promote a good time. That goes for anyone residing in either region who is curious to immerse themselves in Gareth Huw Evans’ 4K renewal of 2011 crime pic, The Raid in cinemas on May 30 from Umbrella Entertainment The movie shot its leading screen talents to genre acclaim with the likes of Iko Uwais and Yayan Ruhian reaching global stardom after Evans’ tastemaker hit, Merantau. The two are joined by heavy hitter Joe Taslim and Donny Alamsyah as the story culminates the events of a botched tower block raid that pits brother against brother amidst machinations of police corruption, and a landlord crime boss’s violent reprisal with an army at his disposal. Evans, who is also in post-production on Netflix’s Havoc with Tom Hardy, touted his retinkering with The Raid in the last few years, […]
Coming soon from Umbrella Entertainment is Suka, the new Asian/Australian gangster thriller starring Jenny Wu (Lady Bloodfight, Australia Day). The film is directed by Heidi Lee Douglas from a script she penned with Lily Cheng and Tsu Shan Chambers, and with action sequences by NSW-based stunt coordinator Jackie Murray (Gold, Wyrmwood: Apocalypse). BROUGHT TOGETHER BY FATE, PULLED APART BY FAMILY In Western Sydney where crime gangs rule, the Yang clan’s thirst for power continues to threaten the lives of many. The Dawood family is their only line of defence against them. Wasiya, the Dawood matriarch, stealthily forges alliances to quash the hold of the Yang family – led by their patriarch, Jun– who murdered her husband when she was heavily pregnant. Suka also stars Ethan Browne, Grace Huang, Jenny Wu, Paul He, and Tsu Shan Chambers. Pre-orders are now available for the film’s DVD ahead of its release in October.
2005 was a terrific year for niche Asian film fans fond of actor Lee Byung-hun amid the ceremony for his darling hit thriller, A Bittersweet Life, about a mob enforcer faced with retribution by his boss after falling for his repressed mistress. The film is a point of inspiration for some directors and was even the topic of a potential remake in the U.S., the updates on which remain to be seen. Moreover, the film also is available on streaming on some platforms which is great given the film’s Out-Of-Print status from physical media in most markets in the years since. Nevertheless, if you’re knowledgeable of Aussie-based firm Umbrella Entertainment and you’ve been craving this title as a longstanding hopeful addition to your collection, consider yourself in luck. The company is releasing a decked out 4K restoration of the flick on Blu-Ray this April, loaded with special features and gems, […]
Following on from the excellent MANDY (2018) and COLOUR OUT OF SPACE (2019), Nic Cage appears in another avante-garde offering called ‘PRISONERS OF THE GHOSTLAND’ (2021). Cage stars as a condemned man recruited by a wealthy stranger to locate and rescue his daughter imprisoned by some bizarre cult like group. Though a simplistic premise, the movie itself is anything but one note and even the two-minute trailer evokes two adjectives: boldly insane. Whether real or imagined, this trailer immediately reminded me of the bizarre ‘EL TOPO’ (1970) directed by Alejandro Jodorowsky. Drawing from symbolism from both East and West, the characterisations in ‘PRISONERS OF THE GHOSTLAND’ (2021) unashamedly wear its influences on its sleeve; adapting cowboys in westerns, sword fighters from samurai films and a clear post-apocalyptic setting – again boasting the premise that, anything goes. As it courts various genres, the trailer itself looks somewhat messy and incredibly unfocussed; […]
