It’s been nearly a year since Toei revealed a behind-the-scenes featurette for 15th century sword slasher Muromachi Outsiders. A small teaser arrived in the summer revealing just a smidget of what’s in store with leading actor Yo Oizumi in his first-ever action role, and now we have an official trailer and poster to help pitch to the global chambara crowds ahead of a January 17 release in Japan. Kyoto, 1461. A devastating famine and plague simultaneously struck this area. The ruling powers remained inept, enjoying their wealth. Seeing the hellish landscape of Kyoto, a vagrant, Hasuda Hyoe, rallied outlaws and orchestrated an unprecedented riot against the colossal authority. Muromachi Outsiders is directed by Nemesis, Joker Game and Confession Of Murder director Yu Irie, and is based on the 2016 Shincho Bunko series of novels from multi-award winning author, Ryosuke Kakine. The movie also stars “Naniwa Danshi” member Kento Nagao, Akira […]
At least tentatively, Muromachi Burai is the name we can go on as we await the next sword slasher from Nemesis, Joker Game and Confession Of Murder director Yu Irie. The film stars Yo Oizumi (Kiba: The Fangs Of Fiction) in his first-ever action role, along with “Naniwa Danshi” member Kento Nagao (Rohan au Louvre), Akira Emoto (Egoist), Wakana Matsumoto (Pornographer: Playback), and Shinichi Tsutsumi (The Mole Song trilogy). Muromachi Burai is based on the 2016 Shincho Bunko publication, a series of novels from multi-award winning author, Ryosuke Kakine. Set in wartorn 15th century Kyoto, on the eve of the Onin War, the movie centers on a band of outlaws led by Hyoe (Oizumi) a scoundrel whose lethal sword skills place him at the tip of the spear in a deadly uprising against the courrpt Shogunate and its army, led by former friend-turned-archrival, Doken (Tsutsumi). Among those rounding out the […]
When Yu Irie isn’t thrilling audiences with works like Joker Game, his Memoirs Of A Murderer and A.I. Amok, he’ll also dive a bit into different grades of comedy like with Hibi Rock: Puke Afro and the Pop Star or 2018’s beat ’em up romp, Gangoose. His latest, Ninja Girl, takes a more artful approach boasting the occasional lively and upbeat dance track throughout the more cerebral, quiet tone. The slow-burn notwithstanding, however, it’s rabblerousing shenanigans of Fukuya City’s Mayor and his campaign, running high on a platform of xenophobia with an ordinance underway to signage that bans foreigners, and some of the constituents aren’t having it. This especially includes Goro (Shohei Uno), a former journalist and grandfather to city hall employee, Miu (Saki Fukuda), a quaint, unassuming paper pusher who largely goes unnoticeable by her staff. Goro’s refusal to agree to the ordinance only adds to the discomfort for […]
With a director as able as Yu Irie to deliver an intriguing and suspenseful thriller as he’s done in films like Joker Game and his recent Confession Of Murder remake, his latest, A.I. Collapse looks to continue the trend here. He directs a cast led by Takao Osawa who plays a medical scientist whose latest life-saving A.I. system goes autonomous and begins plotting to taking out humans it deems unfit to live, and it does so in numbers. That’s an intense setup if ever, and audiences in Japan will have their chance to watch it all unfold on January 31, 2020. Also starring are Kento Kaku, Alice Hirose and Takanori Iwata.
It’ll be a few years since moviegoers heard from Gangoose and Vigilante helmer Yu Irie, but local filmgoers can feel free to scribble in a Janaury 31, 2020 release to look at his newest venture, AI Collapse. A tale set in 2030 when artificial intelligence, an autonomous and essential aspect of everyday human life suddenly teeters with mankind on the brink of extinction, AI Collapse stars Takao Osawa, Kento Kaku, Takanori Iwata, Alice Hirose and Tomokazu Miura from a script by Irie. Warner Bros. Japan unveiled the official teaser above just on Tuesday morning. Check it out above along with a first shot at the teaser poster below!
