Jackie Chan is 71 years old this week, so today’s pick for “The Movies That Moved Me” brings us to a memorable classic in my book: Sammo Hung’s WHEELS ON MEALS!
THE CHAMPIONS is now available from Eureka Entertainment.
Brandy Yuen’s 1983 action sports comedy, The Champions, is coming to Blu-Ray from Eureka Entertainment. Yuen Biao heads the Golden Harvest classic whose production frame work hails from the celebrated Yuen Clan with Yuen Shun-yi (The Miracle Fighters) and Yuen Chun Yeung (Armour of God) behind the action and stunts. Lee Tong (Yuen Biao, Dreadnaught) is a young farmer who has grown up in an isolated rural community. When an indiscretion lands him in hot water, he leaves his home in the countryside and heads for the big city – where he meets Suen (Cheung Kwok-keung, Eastern Condors), an urban soccer player who recognises Tong’s talent for the beautiful game and encourages him to try out for a pro team. But Tong’s first chance at sporting glory is scuppered by a rivalry with the narcissistic King (Dick Wei, Project A), who relegates the newcomer to cleaning up after his teammates. […]
I first bought a copy of Sammo Hung’s 1979 hit film, Knockabout, a little less than twenty years ago via 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment on DVD. It was during a time when I could do nothing but spend all my hard earnings on DVDs and certainly Fox’s line-up of Hong Kong classics had piqued my interest. Nowadays Arrow Video is carrying the torch for the film’s North American distribution per its acquisition and matriculation of Hong Kong niche releases and they’re soon welcoming it on a newly restored 2K Blu-Ray format with tons of special features, including on their exclusive streamer, Arrow Player beginning March 28. The language, official trailer and Blu-Ray art can all be viewed below. Pre-orders are up as well! Having established himself as Hong Kong’s premier action choreographer throughout the 1970s, Sammo Hung ended the decade by directing a non-stop assault of kung fu classics […]
Eighties Hong Kong cinematic action at its peak can be best summed up by one title as good as almost any for its time: Corey Yuen’s 1986 film, Righting Wrongs, centering on screen legend Yuen Biao in the role of a prosecutor whose maverick search for justice outside the law puts him in the throes of a duty-bound Hong Kong cop, played by cinematic action starlet Cynthia Rothrock. The story, which runs high on pulse-pounding action and stunts as the story builds forward, hits a major climax with blockbuster fisticuffs featuring both stars, and if you haven’t seen the film yet, this latest cinematic action breakdown by stuntman, mo-cap artist and filmmaker Eric Jacobus could be something of a spoiler. Well Go USA allowed Jacobus the courtesy of using their footage to synthesize and study the gangbuster action and fight choreography by Yuen and Hong Kong action stalwart Sammo Hung, […]
If nothing else, 88 Films understands the need for posterity on physical media when it comes to classic Hong Kong cinema. For this, say what you will about previous incarnations of Corey Yuen and Sammo Hung’s hit action comedy, Dragons Forever, but the UK-based firm is finally rolling out a portion of the goods with the official key art for its re-release as announced earlier this year, as illustrated by Robert “Kung Fu Bob” O’Brien. The film centers on a lawyer, an arms dealer and a career burglar (Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung, Yuen Biao) who find themselves embroiled in a mix of romantic upheaval, and a face-to-face duel with an underground narcotics operation fronting as a chemical factory. The film also stars Pauline Yeung, Deanne Ip and Yuen Wah with appearances by Billy Chow, Benny “The Jet” Urquidez, Phillip Ko-Fei and many more for its re-relese which will be 4K, […]

I’m currently getting over a cold, but hopefully you’ve rested well from your Easter weekend as the past two days have been brimming with all things Batsy and Super. Otherwise, here and now and once more, we attribute our day of the week to an article filled with things that make up a lot of the entertainment you see on the big screen, thanks to none other than the stunt community. It’s a little shorter than preferred but I think you’ll still get your fill, in my opinion. Getting things off to an excellent start this week is actor and stuntman Eric Jacobus with his latest movelist performance attributed to Tekken game villain, Heihaichi Mishima, followed by reels from filmmaker and action director Bueno, stunt performers Ryan Robertson, tricker Vellu Saarela, Aviel Ayoung, Curt Wheeler, Nick Stanner, and Steve Bravler, and a fan reel knitted with scenes attributed to celebrated […]
The latest teaser for action legend Sammo Hung’s new movie, The Bodyguard, released on his birthday last week, and it was one of the best things to ever tilt this side of internet kung fu fandom. Hung is back with a roster of stellar cast members this time encompassing the story of a retired guard battling old age and dementia while forced to deal with seedy underworld henchmen operating on the Russia/China border to rescue a young girl. Of course this means getting to watch Hung in his element once more, and so he goes with the film’s planned April 1 release while we now have a new crop of character posters featuring our top-notch cast, with Hung and actor Eddie Peng, as well as Lau and young actress Chen Pei-Yan as the respective father and girl…and seasoned film thesps Yuen Biao, Hu Jun, William Feng and a one-sheet trifecta […]
Producer and screenwriter Wong Jing is back, returning once more to the horror genre and gearing toward the vampire niche with director Daniel Chan for Sifu VS. Vampire, formerly known as La Télé De Vampire. Promotion is starting to kick off with some online virility this week and it hints to a fair share of having a little bit of everything to incorporate with its visual grim vampiric spectacle: some drama, a little romance and comedy and some silly gags. Of course though, if you’re going to put in people like incomparable Hong Kong cinema legend Yuen Biao (Knockabout, My Kingdom) and rising martial arts actor Phillip Ng (The Underdog Knight, Once Upon A Time In Shanghai), you’d better include some action in this package. Fortunately, the brand new trailer includes a handful of that as well! SYNOPSIS: Small time gangster Nicky (Ronald Cheng) and his friend Boo (Phillip Ng) […]
