The AMERICAN HORROR STORY: 1984 Trailer Is Here!

It is nearly fall, which means that soon we will begin yet another season of American Horror Story. Since the anthology series began in 2011, each season usually gives audiences a new storyline full of interesting characters and lots of creepiness.

This season is titled American Horror Story: 1984 and it promises to be a love song dedicated to 80’s slasher films. The trailer dropped this week and if you haven’t seen it already, here it is:

A group of teenagers decides to work as camp counselors during the summer, they seem to hit someone on their way there, and an inmate of an asylum has broken loose? I can’t wait to feather my hair and put on my parachute pants and “Members Only” jacket while I watch this season!

Up until last season, AHS was known as an anthology series, with each season being a stand alone. One could easily enter the fandom during any season’s start without having seen or having any knowledge of the previous seasons. There have been small crossovers before, such as characters either in or referenced in multiple seasons (Pepper, Billie Dean Howard, Queenie, and Twisty, for example), but nothing as major as season eight’s crossover between Murder House and Coven. That season required viewers to have seen both season one and three and brought back nearly all of the characters from those two seasons.

So what does that mean for season nine?

One fan theory is that the seasons of AHS each represent one of Dante’s circles of hell. This was shared by show creator Ryan Murphy on his own Instagram page with the comment: “Interesting.”

Season 9 representing “lust” would make sense seeing as most of the 1980’s horror films followed the scary movie rule that if one was not a virgin, they’d likely end up dead. Most of the attacks on the campers of Crystal Lake (in the film Friday the 13th) occur while the teenagers are busy engaging in sexual activity.

But if AHS seasons really do represent the levels of hell, does that mean season 9 will be its last? Only time will tell. FX has renewed the show for a 10th season so we will just have to wait and see what else Murphy comes up with.
