THE FURIOUS Doles Out The Fury In A Pair Of First Look Stills At Kenji Tanigaki’s New Martial Arts Thriller
A new Variety exclusive is out as of Friday along with a pair of official stills to help announce the completion of upcoming martial arts thriller, The Furious. The Bangkok, Thailand-set production is directed by action specialist Kenji Tanigaki (Enter The Fat Dragon, Sakra) and features a pan-Asian cast including mainland Chinese star Xie Miao, Indonesian star Joe Taslim, and Thai star Jeeja Yanin, along with Yang Enyu, Brian Le, Joey Iwanaga, and Yayan Ruhian.
Tanigaki directs from a script by Mak Tin Shu, and follows a simple tradesman (Xie Miao) who fights his way through a complex web of criminals and evil agents in a frantic attempt to win back his kidnapped daughter by any means necessary. Production hails from Edko Films Ltd. whose Bill Kong is joined by producers Frank Hui and Shan Tam, along with XYZ Films whose Todd Brown and Aram Tertzakian are exec producing next to Michael J. Werner.
The Furious is financed by Edko Films Ltd. and Edko will distribute in China, Hong Kong and Macao. XYZ Films is handling sales in all other territories and will introduce the film to buyers at the upcoming 49th Toronto International Film festival (TIFF).
XYZ’s Brown spoke more on the film’s upcoming movement at the 49th edition of the festival to shed a little more light on the film’s prospects in Variety reporter Patrick Frater’s coverage:
Brown says a buyers meeting will take place in Toronto, “to which Netflix and others are invited.” “Obviously, we are targeting a theatrical release, but we also have a takeout price in mind if a streamer really wants to take the film off our hands,” he says.
Tanigaki has spent more than twenty years building a reputation as the absolute gold standard for fight coordinators in Asia, working as Donnie Yen’s key collaborator for decades, and performing fight work on massive hit franchises in both China and Japan such as Soi Cheang’s blockbuster Monkey King films massive hit manga/anime adaptations of Rurouni Kenshin. The action stalwart most recently served as stunt coordinator on Soi Cheang’s Cannes-selected hit, Twilight Of The Warriors: Walled In, which has become the most successful Hong Kong production of all time at the Hong Kong box office.
XYZ has a long history in the martial arts space with credits like The Raid franchise, and films like The Night Comes For Us, and Headshot. Their sales and production slate currently incldues 2024 TIFF Platform title Daniela Forever, Full Throttle Mindset starring Josh Duhamel and Lukas Gage, Flesh of the Gods, directed by Panos Cosmatos and starring Kristen Stewart and Oscar Isaac, He Bled Neon with Joe Cole and Rita Ora, Kill Me with Allison Williams and Charlie Day, Free Fall starring Zachary Levi and directed by Zoë Bell, Sundance title Skywalkers: A Love Story, which sold to Netflix, Blackberry starring Gotham and Independent Spirit-award nominee Glenn Howerton, which was released by IFC Films, Ash starring Eiza González and Aaron Paul and directed by Flying Lotus, and the Netflix Original Havoc, directed by Gareth Evans and starring Tom Hardy and Forrest Whitaker. XYZ Films recently announced the global acquisition of The Ritual starring Al Pacino and Dan Stevens.
