THE LAST OF THE TRIBE: Ethan Hawke Joins Orlando Bloom And Zaya Guarani Join Claudio Borrelli’s New Jungle Thriller
Actor Ethan Hawke (Boyhood, Before Trilogy) is joining Orlando Bloom (Pirates of the Caribbean, Lord of the Rings films) and previously announced Brazilian actress and environmental activist Zaya Guarani (Postcards From Earth) for Claudio Borrelli’s new film, The Last Of The Tribe. Borrelli will direct from a screenplay by 3x Emmy nominee Mark Bailey (Downfall, The Volcano: Rescue from Whakaari), per announcements on Friday from Dave Bishop, CEO of Protagonist Pictures which is launching sales at EFM this month in Berlin.
Borrelli’s The Last of the Tribe takes its inspiration from the literary work of the same name by award-winning investigative journalist Monte Reel. Billed as “a taut jungle thriller set in the wild heart of the Brazilian Amazon,” Hawke stars as William Phelan, a washed-out Chicago cop turned corporate gun-for-hire sent to investigate a death in the Amazon rainforest. His mission brings him face-to-face with the last surviving member of an uncontacted Indigenous tribe, and a moral reckoning: Phelan must decide whether to complete his mission or save a life and reclaim his soul.
Crewing up the production is acclaimed cinematographer Adolpho Veloso (Train Dreams) who will serve as DoP. Academy Award winner Edward Saxon (Silence of the Lambs, Adaptation) is producing alongside Steve Schwartz and Paula Mae Schwartz for Chockstone Pictures (All the Old Knives, The Road), Mark Bailey, and Ethan and Ryan Hawke (The Weight, First Reformed). Fernando Meirelles (The Two Popes, City of God) serves as exec producer via his São Paulo-based O2 Filmes.
“The Last of the Tribe is an intense, propulsive thriller with real moral weight at its core,” said Bishop. “Set deep in the Brazilian Amazon, the project pairs elevated genre storytelling with urgent contemporary themes. Claudio has crafted a bold vision, and with Ethan Hawke, Orlando Bloom and Zaya Guarani leading the cast, we’re excited to introduce this standout project to buyers at EFM.”
“I’m drawn to films that slam the raw, the rugged and the cruel head-on into the beautiful and the divine,” said Borrelli. “In this story, the rainforest is both the villain and the savior — that natural and forever conflict is the essence of what I want to capture in The Last of the Tribe.”
“The Last of the Tribe is a tense, gripping, edge-of-your-seat thriller, a real old-school heart pounding ride. And yet, it is also about something that could not be more timely – the destruction of the rainforest and the people who call it home. Our fantastic cast, spearheaded by the extraordinary Ethan Hawke, and now joined by Bloom, are all so smart, and passionate, and talented and committed to the telling of this story. We are thrilled,” added the producers in a joint statement.
Bloom is best known for starring in two of the largest film franchises of all time — The Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean. He received critical acclaim for Sean Ellis’s psychological boxing drama The Cut, released in theaters in 2025, and the action-thriller Red Right Hand opposite Andie MacDowell. He also appeared in the Amazon Prime action-comedy Deep Cover co-starring Bryce Dallas Howard and Nick Mohammed. Bloom will next be seen in Werner Herzog’s upcoming drama Bucking Fastard.
Guarani is an Indigenous Brazilian activist, model, actress, and speaker from the Guarani Mbya ethnicities, born and raised in the Amazon rainforest. Descended from a lineage of women shamans and spiritual leaders, she uses her global platform to champion Indigenous rights, climate justice, and environmental stewardship. Through decolonizing fashion and regenerative advocacy, Zaya bridges ancestral knowledge with modern conversations, challenging systemic inequities and centering Indigenous voices in sustainability. A frontline defender of the Amazon, she inspires systemic change, ensuring Indigenous wisdom drives solutions for a regenerative future. Guarani has also appeared in Darren Aronofsky’s sci-fi documentary, Postcards From Earth.
Borrelli is a Brazilian film director and UCLA-trained filmmaker whose debut feature, Vultures, won both the Critics’ Award and the Audience Award at the 45th São Paulo International Film Festival, and was shortlisted as Brazil’s submission for the 2024 Academy Awards. In addition to his feature work, Borrelli directed multiple episodes of Globoplay’s high-budget series “O Jogo que Mudou a História.” His early work in commercials led to his selection for the prestigious Cannes Film Festival New Director’s Showcase which has spotlighted filmmakers including Jonathan Glazer and Spike Jonze.
Hawke is repped by CAA and MGMT Entertainment; Bloom is repped by WME, Untitled, and Felker Toczek Suddleson McGinnis Ryan; Guarani is repped by Carl Navarro of Spotlight Media.
