THE NIGHT COMES FOR US: Director Timo Tjahjanto Talks More About Julie Estelle's New Role

On Wednesday, breaking news reported that actress Julie Estelle, co-star of Gareth Evans’ The Raid 2 was confirmed to appear in director Timo Tjahjanto‘s latest crime thriller, The Night Comes For Us, currently featuring lead actor Joe Taslim and actor Yayan Ruhian. Following that report, Tjahjanto spoke on-record to Twitchfilm writer Andrew Mack about the status of Estelle‘s preparation for the role:

She is about to enter a heavy duty training phase right now as we will be demanding a LOT of her physically in this film.

I worked with Julie before in my first feature film (Macabre), she was a ferocious kid then.

Watching her in the RAID 2 : Berandal almost 5 years later (Sundance) I literally bit my tongue several times, in awe;  how hardcore she has become, Hammer Girl will be remembered as an iconic character for years to come.

I said to Gareth; I need her man!  And more than that I need you and the boys to mold her into something entirely different. A different kind of beast.

Along with hand to hand combat, I have a specific weapon I want her to use in TNCFU, I spoke about it to Gareth, discussed it with Iko and Yayan, they both are excited as hell to the potential this particular tool of murder can bring to the screen.

The news comes with a heavy-handed level of praise for the actress, now touring the cinema circuit with the cast and crew of The Raid 2 in which she plays the character Hammer Girl. And as a result, the potential remains otherwise boundless, with Tjahjanto eager to build her reputation as a leading lady for today’s generation of martial arts cinema fans worldwide.

The Night Comes For Us stands as the latest in a variety of films being assembled between XYZ Films and Merantau films, with Evans directing the action with fight choreographer Iko Uwais. Filming begins later this Spring ahead of its 2015 release.

Directed by Tjahjanto and co-helmer Kimo Stamboel, their 2009 horror thriller, Macabre is now available online following a press release in November last year. In the meantime, Estelle, Ruhian and Uwais will appear in The Raid 2 for a much-needed wider release beginning the week of March 28.
