As frustrating as it may have been for fans wondering about the future of Walt Disney Pictures’s Tron franchise following the sequel run of Tron: Legacy in 2010, it appears things are finally coming a float. It was early last month when a report broke that a third installment would begin shooting in Vancouver this October (much to the surprise of many) which may or may not have meant the return of actor Garett Hedlund to his previous role on top of speculation over that of actress Olivia Wilde‘s reprisal as well.
This week, THR brings official word that both Hedlund and Wilde will be reunited with director Joseph Kosinski for Tron 3 with producer Justin Springer on board. Plot details are being heavily kept underwraps, but those not in the know, the first film, Tron, released in 1982 from writer and director Steve Lisberger with actor Jeff Bridges starring as Kevin Flynn, a videogame designer forced to fight his way out of ENCOM’s computer systems when he gets spirited away into a dark, neon-lit, geometric digital computer world oppressed by Master Control. Kosinski followed suit in 2010 with the release of Tron: Legacy with Lisberger back to produce for actor Hedlund who plays son, Sam, who finds himself spirited away into an upgraded realm of the digital realm while looking for his father, Kevin, and incidentally falling in love with an algorithm named Quarra, played by Wilde.
The sequel positioned itself quite awesomely with sheer upgrades in the stylish action as well as the visual effects with Bridges and co-star Bruce Boxleitner being the recipients of the digital treatment in their respective multiple roles. With any luck, it won’t be long before we hear more on just how this story continues. Stay tuned.
