Award-winning independent filmmaker and actor Fernando Jay Huerto has returned to the internet once more with a brand new short film titled Do The Damn Thing: In Canada. Based on an original concept from friend and fellow filmmaker from Virgina, Lester Nguyen of Rising Tiger Films, Huerto‘s latest installation is a continuation of a self-titled expanded series of the same name that began in 2009, bearing different themes and classic inside jokes, and featuring a versatile selection of independent film actors from around the country and the world, best known for performing high quality fight sequences attributed to the stylings of the beloved Hong Kong action comedy genre.
Do The Damn Thing: In Canada features an amalgam of independent film actors which also include Jabronie Pictures regular, Sunny Smith, and performers DL MacDonald, Alex Chung, Dennis Lafond and Fist Plus Face star Jonny Caines, all ranging from various teams throughout Canada, including Eclipse Stunts, Team 2X and Montreal-based O.S.S. (On Set Stunts) I took some brief time to speak with, Jay earlier on Monday about the project and his experience with the crew back in May. “They are true professionals.” he says. “I loved working with them. They have a similar style of fighting and work flow. It’s like working with my own team.”
I also inquired with actors McDonald and Chung, original members of their own martial arts screenfighting troupe, Eclipse Stunts. “It’s great!” MacDonald tells Film Combat Syndicate in describing his long-term friendship with the 15-veteran indie filmmaker from California. “He’s got a real niche audience that we at Eclipse haven’t really found yet so it was good to collaborate as Eclipse this time. He really knows his audience and delivers what it is that they enjoy seeing.” Chung added his own approval for Huerto, saying, “Working with Jay was great! Having known him online for a long time, it was nice to see that he’s just as cool in person.”
MacDonald and Chung are currently training with their team for new projects between now and 2014, with a slate of new shortfilms both in pre AND post-production, including Jingle Bell Rocked, Hallowed 3, a forthcoming collabration with Yung Lee of Gak Attack and a new grindhouse-style action/horror-heavy project that Chung is currently filming for next year. The two will also be appearing in upcoming episodes for second season of the online webseries, Pete Winning And The Pirates with stunt coordination by Tyler Williams.
