It’s been about five years since independent actor and filmmaker Kyle Wong decided to get serious about directing, having grown a passion for it since the tender age of seven. In 2012, while attending school at the University of Manitoba in Canada, he had begun aligning himself with like-minded individuals to put his editing skills to work and evolving his craft as an independent filmmaker on Canada’s map.
Nowadays, you will find him among that same group in the form of his new symbolically-named indie production company, Black Ice 140 Productions, where they have spent the past two years building their repetoire prior to launching the indie banner this year. Their newest project arrived back in April of this year with the shortfilm, Avici, the first of a 3-part experimental action series that explores a world inspired by homages to literatures, as well as Wong‘s affinity for the Hong Kong action genre.
“The concept of ‘Avici’ was thought up around March of this year.” says Wong. “It was interesting, the idea of being stuck in endless torture and suffering; The idea of a man stuck in the lowest pit of hell was a direct homage to ‘Dante’s Inferno’ and the idea of trapping the protagonist in a martial arts ‘hell’ seemed like an idea to play with.”.
Wong and his team are still keeping busy working on a webseries project, as well as the potential revamp of his 2013 holiday action short, Sentinel, which was picked up by a local company. In the meantime, the Avici trilogy continues to evolve, now with the second of both parts available online for viewing.
