WAYNE: Mark McKenna Rages With A Vengeance In The First Episode Of The YouTube Premium Drama Series

It’s Wayne‘s world and you’re just living it. And if you don’t know and you’re the sorry sack living in Florida with his 1978 Pontiac Trans Am, you’re about to find out courtesy of YouTube Premium following the show’s season one debut on Wednesday.

Created by Shawn Simmons, Mark McKenna stars in the title role, leading a raft of robust performances also featuring actress Ciara Bravo, and actor Joshua J. Williams among the cast. Iain B. MacDonald directed the pilot written by Simmons who exec produces with Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.

Wayne can’t help himself from righting the world’s wrongs. Now, against all odds, he and his one-of-a-kind girlfriend Del are on a road trip from Brockton, Mass to Ocala, Florida to reclaim what’s rightfully his: a majestic old car that was stolen from his sick father. With trouble behind them and danger ahead, Wayne and Del are bound to find themselves with their backs against the wall. But that’s okay. They’ve been there before.

Youtube Premium progressed quite a bit last year as YouTube Red with the season premiere of The Karate Kid spin-off series, Cobra Kai, and as competitive as the streaming market has become of late, you have to give them credit for the strategy they’ve taken in gracing potential consumers with free first episodes.

Obviously it takes a good episode to rope folks in, and rest assured, episode one of Wayne does fantastic in its inaugural presentation of McKenna as a “16-year old Dirty Harry with a heart of gold”. The result that ensues from Wayne meeting Del is a quirky, brash romance that is not without poignancy underneath any and all apprehension to the matter of feelings and such.

Primed and packaged with robust pacing, black comedy and odd characters, violence and pathos, Wayne is definitely a show ripe for the occasion that can hold its own as the action and adventure begins. Hit up the pilot episode above and remember to bear in mind the NSFW forewarning lest you find yourself caught off guard in public.
