Without question, director Bryan Singer has done some incredible work on the X-Men saga dating back to the early two-thousandies. Recent events and troubling revelations may or may have not dampened his prospects on the franchise – I’m not at all certain, though fans weren’t exactly keen on seeing Simon Kinberg take the mantle either. The comments at the time were, in a word, passionate.
At any rate – it is what it is – and forthwith, 20th Century Fox has begun its key campaign with all the initial assets for X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Stemming from the pages of Marvel, the franchise segues back in tow with featured actress Sophie Turner succeeding her performance in the pivotal 2016 franchise entry, X-Men: Apocalypse, in which Professor Charles Xavier compels our heroine to relinquish her power in dispelling the villainous supermutant in the effort of teamwork. Suffice it to say, the next chapter will make things purely worse.
In DARK PHOENIX, the X-MEN face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.
McAvoy returns as the professor once more along with Michael Fassbender as Erik Lensherr/Magneto, Jennifer Lawrence as Raven/Mystique, Nicholas Hoult as Hank McCoy/Beast, Tye Sheridan as Scott Summers/Cyclops, Alexandra Shipp as Orora Munroe/Storn, Kodi Smit-McPhee as Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler, Evan Peters as Pietro Maximoff/Quicksilver, and with Jessica Chastain as a shapeshifter named “Smith”.
