In April, we first broke the news of a new proof-of-concept in the works for James Moten Black’s American Ronin, described as “a contemporary martial arts piece cosigning his love for classic jidaigeki cinema and anime”. Production ultimately had to take a back seat as the United States landed right into a lockdown with California, where Black and his production is based, under curfew for a time due to the Coronavirus pandemic. The state is currently staggering in its efforts to ween itself into a new “normal”, with various independent creatives working around the pandemic to meet safety guidelines in order to carry out their own projects. I actually have a lot to catch up on in anime. Hard to believe that’s it’s been about three years since Akan Satayev’s female-fronted historical war drama, The Legend Of Tomiris, underwent post production, isn’t it? Indeed, that was definitely the case ahead of its local release in Kazakhstan late last year, and with acquisitions thereafter. At any rate, the film is finally making headway following its acquisition by Well Go USA in June, with an official U.S. trailer now online ahead of its September 29 release on Digital, Blu-Ray and DVD. Based on historical heroine Queen Tomiris of Massagetae and her cadre of female warriors (the real-life 6th century BCE Amazonians who inspired the mythical tales), The Legend of Tomiris recounts the tale of the nomadic ruler who overcame great personal tragedy to repel the powerful Persian empire and unite the Great Steppe. The Legend Of Tomiris stars actresses Almira Tursyn and Aizhan Lighg, and actor Adil Akhmetov.

Following last year’s reported deal on STX films actioner, Rogue, Deadline is reporting on a new action film in development titled Legacy. The project is being housed at Village Roadshow Pictures with T.J. Fixman partnering with Phantom Four Films. The film is hailed as an original idea by Fixman, who is best known for penning the Ratchet & Clank video game franchise. It is being described as “a character-driven action film, “in the vein of The Bourne Identity” and centers on “an enigmatic man who sets out to disrupt a powerful underworld run by the 1 percent.” A Bourne-style actioner where the hero battles the rich sounds like a fine setup for a worthwhile story, though I’m curious as to what the particulars are. Just when you thought it was all over at some point in the past year, Netflix found fruit in the prospective return of actor Tom Ellis and a deal that guarantees a promising new season of dark fantasy, action and tongue-in-cheek banter in the hit series, Lucifer. The official trailer is now online for the season five premiere slated for August 21 – 16 episodes to be split in half, reportedly – and you can check it out above. The show also stars Lauren German, Leslie Ann-Brandt, Kevin Alejandro, D.B. Woodside, Rachel Harris, Aimee Garcia and Tricia Helfer.

Bearing a sundry resumé of roles she’s played on screen for close to twenty five years, she’s undoubtedly maintained her viability with a charisma and prowess that certainly meets the demand for the leading lady of a narrative action film, and much like she’s accomplished with Aeon Flux (2005), Hancock (2008) and eventually with George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) and in David Leitch’s Atomic Blonde (2017), Gina Prince-Bythewood’s The Old Guard, now on Netflix, is no exception. Best known for his fan-famed wrestling moniker, actor Aaron Copeland has found himself a niche in the independent scene following credits like his feature film debut in 2000 with Highlander: Endgame, and History channel series, Vikings.
