Well Go USA is officially warming up and stretching its muscles to release Bernard Rose’s latest period outing, Samurai Marathon. The film just premiered at the New York Asian Film Festival with the company now announcing its acquisition for a 2020 release (read our review). Directed by Rose and scored by Philip Glass, the film is based on a true story about the first-ever marathon run in all of Japan. A dark forecast awaits Koala and Midnight Runners director Kim Joo-Hwan’s newest South Korean thriller, The Divine Fury, which is now slated for a July 31 release. The newest official poster is taking stage as well as an English-subbed version of a recent trailer just above. Kim reunites with Midnight Runners actor Park Seo-Joon who tackles the role of an MMA fighter with atheistic principles and a tragic past. When an affliction awakens through scars on his hands, questions begin to arise with hopeful answers through a chance meeting with an exorcist, sparking revelations about his own destiny and newfound abilities ahead of a forthcoming battle with an emissary of The Devil himself. Joining park are actors Ahn Sung-Ki and Woo Do-Hwan with martial arts choreography by Park Yong-Shik. Times are-a-changin’ in director Bernard Rose’s jidaigeki debut, Samurai Marathon 1855, a 105-minute period epic based on Akihiro Dobashi’s 2014 novel with a story centered around Japan’s very first marathon. We have quite a few exciting announcements pending here in the states when it comes to genre releases, and one can only hope they’ll include Ha Won-Joon’s new film, Fist And Furious. Cult action fan favorite, actor Jung Doo-Hong makes a return to the big screen this time as an ex-cop with a knife stuck in his skull and on a mission of vengeance with the help of an opportunistic video jockey, played by Ryu Deok-hwan (Default). Also starring are Seo Eun-ah (Arthdal Chronicles series, Missing), Jung Ui-kap (Chronicle Of A Blood Merchant), Ryu Seung-kuk (Biting Fly), Choi Je-heon (Revenger), Kim Sa-kwon (Musudan), Kwon Jae-hwan (Forgotten) and Choi Ha-na (Giant series, The Mighty Gift). Wintery North American landscapes are the backdrop of the film’s opening sequences with a woman speeding down a path in a snowmobile. A formidable highlight for this year’s festival circuit, Kan Eguchi’s action comedy, The Fable, delivers a steady balance of the silly with purposeful action, story development, and palpable drama to boot. Clocking in at two hours and some change, it’s a sizeable enough template with actor Junichi Okada to absorb himself into a role layered enough to keep interesting during the film’s quieter moments. Some action fans might take umbrage some at this given much of the oddball comedy sampled in the trailers thusfar; I do posit that a good, fair viewing would defintiely change some opinions for what the film delivers during its runtime.
