It feels like it’s been a while since I’ve seen an explosive Korean period actioner. For this, I guess director Kim Sang-man saw us coming and knew well what to do about it, and that’s where Netflix has been chiming in of late with a look at his new film, Uprising. The streamer teased the flick with a pair of stills earlier this month and now we have an official teaser to help start things off nicely ahead of its October 11 launch. In the Joseon Dynasty, two friends who grew up together — one the master and one the servant — reunite post-war as enemies on opposing sides. In Memoriam: James Earl Jones (1931-2024)

Fans may remember actor James Earl Jones from any number of the near-200 credits he shares in film and television as one of the most celebrated and EGOT-Winning thespians of the last century. In my upbringing, I knew him as either King Jaffe Joffer (Coming To America), TKD Team USA coach Frank Couzo (Best Of The Best), Mustafa (The Lion King), Thulsa Doom (Conan The Barbarian), and the longstanding voice of Darth Vader (Star Wars) in each of his respective film titles for these characters. His most recent screen credits were his return to the role of Vader in the Star Wars saga Disney+ series “Obi-Wan Kenobi” and in Amazon’s Eddie Murphy-led sequel, Coming 2 America. I saw both of those, and I carry those performances with me to this day, especially in light of the sad news coming out of the trades of his passing while at home in Dutchess […]

eVil Sublet will release on all digital platforms in North America on October 1 from Lion Heart Distribution. You don’t always have to “reinvent the genre” to make a good movie. Most times, you just need to tell a good story, and some of those stories will be acquired tastes. Alas, as someone not particularly drawn to horror, I would say the biggest appeal for me with a film like eVil Sublet is more ado with its New York indie aesthetics. It’s a horror movie teeming with lighthearted energy aplenty to accommodate its more macabre and grotesque elements.
