Director Doug Liman wrote a compelling and nuanced op-ed presented at Deadline on Wednesday, elucidating the case for his boycott of the upcoming SXSW premiere of his new movie, Road House. In the article, Liman details how Amazon slated the movie for a streaming release, thus reversing the film’s initial theatrical prospects following the company’s acquisition of MGM into its library back in Spring of 2022. He also highlights the importance of sustaining theatrical releases to maintain the film industry at large, citing a number of things including film performance positives on streaming platforms resulting from theatrical windows, to computers lacking the “experience of laughing and cheering and crying with a packed audience in a dark theater”. BLACK MASK: Pre-Orders Are Now Up For The Fully Uncut 1996 Jet Li Actioner From Eureka Classics

Following the Eureka/MVD output deal, the official details are now out for Black Mask, director Daniel Lee’s high-octane 1996 sci-fi martial arts action thriller starring Jet Li, Karen Mok and late screen thesp Patrick Lung. The upcoming Eureka Classics re-release marks latest update from the deal as one of two titles announced last week, with Black Mask resurfacing once again following its theatrical U.S. release from Artisan Entertainment in 1999. The new version is a limited edition, remastered and restored in 2K and will be a fully uncut version of the film debuting in the UK on April 22, and made available for the first time in the U.S. on Blu-Ray from April 23. Only 2000 copies are available per territory and will feature an O-card slipcase and collector’s booklet, plus a bonus disc featuring an alternate Taiwanese cut and an extended version of the film. BADE MIYAN CHOTE MIYAN Teaser Reveals Latest Actioner With Akshay Kumar And Tiger Shroff

Hindi barnburner action continues its run with Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, the latest from Sultan and Tiger Zinda Hai director Ali Abbas Zafar. The film joins leads Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff for the film which has since moved up its previous December 2023 to an April 10 release in time for the Eid Holiday. Of course there’s little to spot online in terms of plot so the teaser footage below is really all there is to go on, and there’s plenty to take from it if big scale action and brooding with a buddy twist is your thing. And you can tell that Kumar and Shroff end up as buddies, especially when they’re kicking whatever asses are in front of them in typical stylish and coordinated Bollywood fashion. Streaming Sleepers: Upi Avianto’s SRI ASIH: THE WARRIOR Now Available On Tubi

I’m holding out for a Blu-ray grab of director Upi Avianto’s latest Bumilangit dibs with Sri Asih: The Warrior. In the meantime, the film quietly rolled out on the free ad-supported platform, Tubi where you can now check out the successor to Joko Anwar’s BCU launchpad that was Gundala in 2019. Based on R.A. Kosasih’s 1954 comic, actress Pevita Pearce stars in the title role of Avianto’s iteration as an MMA fighter destined for greatness as a force of evil threatens the city. February is going to be a gamechanger for a lot of fans of ethnically diverse shows and films, specifically on Netflix. The streamer’s adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender has proven to be much more dynamic and authentic under the stewardship of creator Albert Kim, in succession from the show’s heyday as an iconic Nickelodeon property. And that’s just based on some of the promotional footage and images that have rolled out in the last few months for the show. Granted, of course there are some who are less keen with a preference to more adherent wuxia content, which is cool. Actor, stuntman, motion capture performer, video essayist and filmmaker Eric Jacobus (“Mortal Kombat Legacy”) will be releasing his 2006 hit action comedy, Contour, for free on YouTube in the coming weeks. Jacobus made the announcement last week in a community post on his channel last week, further offering followers a chance to provide feedback with an advanced screening. Billed as the “black & blue” edition (as illustrated by the film’s original poster), Contour was the next major step for Jacobus and his fledgling team of aspiring stunt performers known as The Stunt People, after co-directing Immortal with Chelsea Steffensen, and winning big with MTV shortfilm crowdpleaser, Undercut. She’ll do whatever it takes to get back home to her girls, but first she’ll have to find out why inmates go missing to stay alive.
