SHIN ULTRAMAN, THE KILLER, FULL STRIKE And More New And Classic Titles Heading Up The In-Person 2022 Edition Of The New York Asian Film Festival
The 20th edition of the New York Asian Film Festival is in full swing next month as a fully in-person event launching this July, after going virtual in 2020 and taking a hybrid route last year. The first wave of the festival’s full line-up is also now online with over 60 new and classic titles, including some exciting features that have arrived this year as well.
Overlook V Review: Mark Meir’s THE SUMMONED, A Spiraling Faustian Tale Of Dark Redemption
Mark Meir’s feature directorial debut brings to life a script by Yuri Baranovsky with The Summoned, a contained thriller that opens with some eerie cinematography and shots of a desolate forest area, and imagery of a man digging a ditch for a what looks like a body. None of it makes sense at first, but that’s really one of the best parts of The Summoned as you dive into the film’s chilling exposition.

Welp, it’s about that time now with the first wave out of the way and now the official second wave of titles to be hosted for the 26th Fantasia International Film Festival, inclusive of another round of diverse and unique films and some key spectacular thrillers. The announcement firstly hails Severin Films’s Kier-La Janisse for her contributions to film and literary work of more than two decades and then some, and a spotlight on queer cinema with the works of Rita Baghdadi, Eduardo Casanova, Tara Thorne and others.You also get KC Carthew’s Polaris which has a nice read; Shinji Higuchi’s Shin Ultraman gets included; Franklin Ritch’s World Premiere of internet vigilante thriller The Artifice Girl; Aya Ashina boxing drama starrer Red Shoes; Shinzo Katayama’s serial killer thriller Missing; Jesse Cooke Thomas’s hot new Cult Hero; Lenin M. Sivam’s small town dramatic thriller The Protector; South Korean gangbuster crime hit sequel The Roundup starring Don Lee, and so, SO much more!

The fifth Overlook Film Festival is just around the corner ahead of its June 2 kick-off and the full-line up is still available with more information at the website on how to participate. I guess that’s one residual effect of pandemic fever, and while I can only imagine the hype and excitement of those who will finally be able to return to the festival atmosphere in-person for screenings, workshops and more, I share the mood all the same albeit remotely as I can’t make the travel, and it’s a privilege to help share a voice as the festival has just announced its 26th edition with a first wave of titles topped by ceremonial tributes to cinematic legend and action cinema auteur, John Woo.

It’s been about a week since the fifth Overlook Film Festival announced its first wave with Scott Derrickson’s upcoming Universal/Blumhouse June thriller, The Black Phone, premiering on the festival’s closing night. This week, we have a second wave of titles headlined by the opening night premiere of Ana Lily Amirpour’s Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon, which has since been acquired by Saban for theatrical release in the U.S. later this year as of trade reports a few months ago.

BFI SOUTHBANK CINEMA to Run Anime Programming Through April and May
The British Film Institute (BFI) is a charitable organization in the UK, focused on film-making and television promotion and preservation. The organization maintains a library of over 11,000 titles of various cultural and historical significance. They also run the BFI Southbank cinema, which holds four screens for curated programming throughout the week. This April and May, the BFI aims to show the British public that anime can be much more than “Post-apocalyptic worlds, fetishized characters and ultraviolence…”, by promoting a special block of programming spanning the history of the genre, from it’s origination to some of the latest international hit films, and truly represents a wide variety of films that can appeal to fans of more than just action!
‘Black Kung Fu Cinema’ Knuckles Up For Blaxploitation Screenings In Durham This Spring
This Spring, down south will be the place to be as Speller Street Films, in association with The Pinhook and Mo’ Better Soul, sets up shop in Durham, North Carolina, as its next stop for traveling Blaxploitation cinema exhibition and screening series, “Black Kung Fu Cinema”.
