Our own Mike Garcia has covered the work of late auteur Nobuhiko Obayashi on this site for a good deal of time. He lives in Spain, although I’d imagine if he resided in my neck of the woods he’d be all-in with what’s going down at Japan Cuts on a yearly basis, particularly with next month’s run of Obayashi-directed classics titled Obayashi ’80s: The Onomichi Trilogy & Kadokawa Years. The program includes sextet of titles including I Are You, You Am Me (Exchange Students) (1982), School in the Crosshairs (1981), The Little Girl Who Conquered Time (1983), Lonely Heart (Miss Lonely) (1985), The Island Closest to Heaven (1984), and His Motorbike, Her Island (1986). Prices vary for members and non-members alike, so if you’re in town and want some classic Japanese delights in your eyes, head to the website and get your tickets before the slate’s weeklong run beginning February […]
Actor and filmmaker Bruce Khan (Revenger, The Killer) is pounding the pavement lately to promote his own series of martial arts and screenfighting seminars through his platform, S.E.M. Academy, in North America. His next stop will be at Mr. J’s Gymnastics in New York City’s Williamsburg section of Brooklyn on Saturday, January 25, and Sunday, January 26, from 2:00pm to 6:00pm. There’s a payment tier for the events as well, with $150 for one day, $300 for the weekend, and $400 for an entire VIP package that extends to a private one hour session with the actor on whatever attendees want to discuss. There was a promo cut together boosting the event that recently made the rounds which included a little bit of action from his upcoming thriller, Purgatory: Zone Of Murderers, spliced in. That promo pretty much disappeared into the ether, but if you’re in Brooklyn this month and up […]
The seventh edition of Beyond: The Cary Film Festival in Cary, North Carolina, is set to kick off on September 5 at the Cary Theater. Part of the line-up will see the festival’s screening of Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill: Vol. 1, in association with 3 Chambers Fest, with the film screened with a live scene-by-scene music score by Shaolin Jazz. The first half of a two-volume diptych, Tarantino’s Kill Bill: Vol. 1 released in 2003, unleashing a revival of classic Asian cinema tropes infused with his groundbreaking and often audacious style. In the film, Uma Thurman stars as an unnamed Bride whose life of repose and impending motherhood and marriage is violently upended by her former employer, Bill, played by the late David Carradine. Having survived the ordeal following a four year coma, the Bride plots course for vengeance against the people who murdered her fiance and wedding party, and […]
Our own parent site Pop Geeks had some time to spare in the past week to take a gander at this summer’s goings on at the Undiscovered Realm Comic Con up in White Plains, N.Y.. They joined two panels for the event, one for the cast of New Line Cinema’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1990), and another for the voice cast of the classic animated series, “Thundercats” (1985). YouTubers @ms.aislingsasmr and @consistency contributed to the video content provided to Pop Geeks which you can view below. Enjoy, and feel free to visit popgeeks.com for more news and updates. UPDATE – 2.16.24 3:35pm EST: Screening for the 7pm slot on February 28 for Hundreds Of Beavers has sold out! Congratulations to the filmmakers as well, and indeed, folks still keen on seeing the film may do so with TWO new screening slots opened, including one for the same evening at 9:45pm, and one on March 1 at 7pm at New Plaza Cinema. More info is still available at the Partiful page. EARLIER: I only got wind of this invite on Monday and as such, I’m compelled to stan a friend on this platform like I do frequently. Because that’s who Jon Truei is to me, and has been since I met him more than a decade ago at a New Years’ Eve party. Truei is a filmmaker whose work history dates back to the pre-YouTube era of indie action along with the likes of Joey Min, Fernando Jay Huerto, […]
I’m inclined to help spread the word for a new GoFundMe campaign now circulating for actress and stuntwoman Carrie Annie Bernans (The Color Purple, Marvel’s Black Panther and Avengers Infinity War/Endgame). Per the latest report from Deadline and updates via social media, an alleged hit-and-run driver crashed into an outdoor dining establishment in midtown Manhattan at 1:30am on Monday, injuring nine people. Deadline’s Mike Fleming Jr. and several outlets reported on the incident with a statement from Bernans’ publicist, citing Bernans was one of nine people who suffered multiple injuries before the suspect, who “backed up and rammed into another car” was apprehended by police. Graphic images and details about the incident can be viewed and read at Bernans’ GoFundMe as well as her Instagram page where Bernans also confirmed that her newborn son was in a hotel with their family at the time of the incident. As par for […]
Actor and action star Tak Sakaguchi is returning to Texas next week to host stunt action and self-defense seminar at Tukong Martial Arts in Austin on September 22. In addition, the seminar will coincide with the promotion of the actor’s latest feat, One-Percenter, which will have its next premiere on Saturday, September 23 at this year’s edition of Fantastic Fest. The film is produced by Takayuki Ota (Crazy Samurai Musashi) and Ryo Uchiyama, and also marks a reunion for both the star and director following previous credits like Battlefield Baseball, Tebana Sankichi: Snot Rocket & Super Detective, Cromartie High: The Movie, Deadball and Yakuza Weapon, as well as […]

If you’re at all keen on the festival scene in the last several years, then you may have gotten wind of Malaysian action thriller Geran (a.k.a. Silat Warriors: Deed Of Death). The movie premiered at the 19th New York Asian Film Festival where it earned its debutant director Areel Abu Bakar the Daniel A. Craft Award For Excellence In Action Cinema, before Well Go USA swooped in for its commercial release of the pic, and Bakar himself has gone on to direct a few more titles since then. For this, we turn to Walid (meaning “father” in Arabic), a new action adventure with Bakar back in full bloom with his Silat action team for a story that permeates the harrowing subject of child trafficking. Actor Megat Sharizal, billed as Malaysia’s own Sammo Hung, leads the cast for the story of a kind and dedicated teacher who takes matters into his […]
Dan Clark’s new award-winning crime comedy, A Kind Of Kidnapping, will touch down next month in the UK via Bulldog Distribution. Starring Patrick Baladi (The Office, Line of Duty), Kelly Wenham (Double Date, Tales from the Lodge), Jack Parry-Jones (The Crown) and Olivia Poulet (The Thick of It), select cinemas will host screenings with cast and crew attendance starting July 13, followed by its digital release on July 24. Winner of multiple awards at the recent Manchester International Film Festival, including Best Actress and Best Screenplay, the film has also started to receive critical acclaim with British Comedy Guide calling it “deliciously outrageous and laugh-out-loud-dark.” A KIND OF KIDNAPPING is the story of 30-something couple Maggie and Brian who, both struggling to get by, decide to kidnap London politician, Richard Hardy. Sadly no one wants to pay the ransom but just before they let Hardy go he wonders if he […]
The first three episodes of Warrior finally arrived on Thursday to kick off the hotly anticipated season three. To relish in the occasion, streaming platform Max is partnering with a trio of multicultural artists to produce and promote an interactive experience using murals currently on display in three major cities: New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Each mural features an iconic image of the show’s original innovator, Bruce Lee, with select cast members on hand on Thursday for each unveiling. “Seeing Warrior return for our 3rd season during this 50th anniversary year for my father is just the ultimate celebration of his legacy.” Said Shannon Lee, Executive Producer on Max’s Warrior and president of the Bruce Lee Foundation. “I couldn’t be more proud of our show, our cast, our crew, and the impact our show continues to have and the entertainment it continues to serve up and celebrating through […]

This is a little different from what I normally post, although generally bolstering the stunt community has been my thing since the birth of this website. Suffice it to say, I’m happy to lend my platform as it pertains to an upcoming stunt training workshop to be held in Austin, Texas for anyone in the area during the weekend of May 20. The workshop is sponsored by 87Eleven Action Design and 87North (if you know, you know!), as well as Janell Smith’s Iron Dragon Productions and Tukong Martial Arts in Austin where the event will be held, hosted by Professor Hugh Fitzgerald and Roger Yuan, and the teams behind the John Wick and Dune films. There’s more info about the facility on the official website, as well as the event which you can learn more about in this Facebook group. Special thanks to Janell Smith for the notes on the […]
