Kento Yamazaki is giving me life this year, personally. The man is a star of multiple franchises including the live-action Golden Kamuy film from director Shigeaki Kubo, as well as its sequel series which debuted last year on WOWOW… AND a feature film continuation as I reported last month. The first film streamed on Netflix and so I can only imagine the upcoming feature will arrive all the same in due time. Meanwhile, the WOWOW series that followed is happily being included in the streamer’s catalogue beginning February 6 with Golden Kamuy: The Hunt Of Prisoners In Hokkaido, with Yamazaki and actress Anna Yamada among the roster of new and returning cast. The intense scramble for the tattooed skins finally begins! The latest trailer introduces several new characters who join the series, which dives into the heart of the story. Live and shine in this thrilling survival battle for hidden […]
I’m as surprised as anyone that Netflix series Bloodhounds is getting a second season. I didn’t expect as much considering the story arc of the first season provided enough closure, but to see another round of action and drama well on the way is a nice little pick-me-up to start the new year. Jason Kim of Officer Black Belt fame is returning to the show, back at the helm as writer and director for a cast once again led by Woo Do-hwan and Lee Sang-yi, along with the new addition of recording artist Jung Ji-hoon – a.k.a. Rain (Ninja Assassin). Studio N is producing the series along with Seven O Six, and Ghost Studio, based on Jeong Chan’s hit webtoon of the same name. Read last week’s announcement below for more, and feel free to revisit my review of the first season here. The production and cast of Bloodhounds Season […]
It has been nearly six years since Marvel Television’s Netflix era of comic book superhero thrills, followed by Disney+’s acquisition of all present shows and subsequent phase-interwoven production thereafter. At long last, we now have Daredevil: Born Again, featuring Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio returning in fine fashion following their respective cameos in “Hawkeye,” “She-Hulk,” and “Echo.” The official trailer is now here as well, which also includes appearances by returning actors Jon Bernthal and Wilson Bethel in the respective roles/alter-egos of Frank Castle/The Punisher, and Benjamin Pointdexter/Bullseye. Rounding out the cast are a mix of new and reuniting names including Elden Henson as Foggy, and Deborah Ann Woll as Karen, and actors Margarita Levieva Zabryna Guevara, Nikki James, Genneya Walton, Arty Froushan, Clark Johnson, Michael Gandolfini, and Ayelet Zurer. In Marvel Television’s “Daredevil: Born Again,” Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox), a blind lawyer with heightened abilities is fighting for justice […]
Director Alexandre Laurent’s eight-part live-action adaptation of Tsukasa Hojo’s manga caper classic, Cat’s Eyes, is already streaming exclusively on French streamer TF1 as of last month. To this, the series is also poised to launch on Amazon Prime in France and we now have an official trailer to help proliferate things a bit. Created by Michael Catz, Cat’s Eyes stars Camille Lou, Constance Labbé, and Claire Romain in an origin procession about three sisters who gather to steal high value art that once belonged to their presumed-late father. As they are pursued by a special task force, the trio also begin to uncover the mystery behind their father’s disapperance years earlier. Cat’s Eyes marks its first treatment here in live action since debuting on the pages of Jump Comics in 1981. I know our own Mike Garcia is a fiend for Hojo’s work. He’s definitely more of a City Hunter […]
This week saw an announcement flying under the radar a bit away from the trades that a new premium television drama is in development following up from the hit action franchise, Ong Bak. The show in question, The Fist Of Ong Bak, is the name of the new eight-part hourlong episodic, and hails from O4 Media in association with 5X Media and Sahamongkolfilm International. Plot and casting details about the new series are pending, while fans pining for more Thai action now have something to ponder since the original broke ground in 2003. As genre fans in the West were already afoot with the reception of Hong Kong crossover sensations like Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Michelle Yeoh and Donnie Yen, it wasn’t long before the niche took notice with Prachya Pinkaew’s inaugural Ong Bak, which essentially catapulted local stuntman and burgeoning action talent Tony Jaa to global stardom. In the […]
The official trailer is now live for Amazon’s Prime Video Japan series adaptation of hit SEGA game franchise, Like A Dragon: Yakuza. The six-part gangland episodic will stream the first three episodes on October 24. Released in 2005 by SEGA, the ‘Yakuza’ game series was positioned as an entertaining game for adults, which found massive fanfare amongst its target audience. The series depicts the lives of fierce yet passionate gangsters and people living in a huge entertainment district, Kamurochō, a fictional district modeled after the violent Shinjuku ward’s Kabukichō, that acts as the backdrop of the gameplay. Like a Dragon: Yakuza showcases modern Japan and the dramatic stories of these intense characters, such as the legendary Kazuma Kiryu, that games in the past have not been able to explore. Like A Dragon: Yakuza stars Ryoma Takeuchi (Love You As The World Ends franchise) and Kento Kaku (From Today, It’s My […]
Stream Terminator Zero on Netflix. Forty years since the Terminator universe took off, the franchise saw some of the highest highs and equally low points. It became a multimedia marvel and entertainment staple within the first two films, followed by four more encompassing the universe in which heroes find themselves battling an oncoming robot/cyborg invasion on both sides of an apocalypse. The latter several are hit or miss depending on where you get your sci-fi takes, although I think it’s fair to conclude failed to live up to the property’s grand potential. If that were the case, the John Connor saga wouldn’t have faltered as it did, and the legacy star power added to the last live-action effort from director Tim Miller might have borne fruit. Perhaps its even more adequate to assert that if the creators on hand were more open instead of purblind to just condensing the story […]
If more Baby Assassins is what you want, then we’re bound to get it at some point. For now, regional residents in the market for TV Tokyo content will be the ones getting first dibs at Baby Assassins Everyday, the new 12-part spin-off series of the whipsmart action comedy film franchise that launched in 2021, announced back in May. Whether or not the series takes place before or after the upcoming Baby Assassins: Nice Days remains to be seen. What we do know is that the show will explore the inner-workings of the guild for which our two lead characters work as they struggle to thrive between jobs as hitwomen, and coming-of-age adults in a crummy job market. Lead actresses Akari Takaishi and Saori Izawa are in the show along with a few other faces from the franchise thusfar, while new editions also include Takuya Kusakawa, Tokio Emoto, and Hirotaro […]
Studiocanal is proudly unveiling the first official key art for Paris Has Fallen, taking its cues from the Gerard Butler-led Has Fallen film franchise and now headed for the small screen. The eight-part hourlong series drama hails from Butler’s G-Base production banner along with Millenium Films and Urban Myth Films. When a terrorist group led by the villainous Jacob Pearce attacks a high-profile event, with the French Minister of Defence as their target, protection officer Vincent Taleb finds himself working with street-smart MI6 operative Zara Taylor to save the day. But when events take a dark turn, Vincent and Zara soon realize that the plan extends beyond just one politician. When they suspect that one of their colleagues in the security services is feeding information to Jacob, Vincent and Zara find themselves needing to rely only on each other. Increasingly isolated and with Jacob always one step ahead, can this unlikely pair […]
While there probably won’t be a continuation of Peacock’s The Continental (although I’m open to being wrong here), the hit show’s influence now draws inspiration in Lionsgate’s John Wick franchise with the studio assuring a pilot order with new television sequel series, John Wick: Under The High Table. As Deadline’s Nellie Andreeva reports, the new show hails from Robert Levine (The Old Man), with Stahelski set to direct the pilot. Written by The Old Man co-creator Robert Levine, the story in John Wick: The High Table picks up directly after the end of John Wick: Chapter 4. John Wick has left the world of the High Table in a tenuous position and a collection of new characters will look to make a name for themselves while some of the franchise stalwart characters remain committed to the old-world order. The description of John Wick: The High Table, which promises to “combine […]
Denis Villeneuve has been a godsend with his revival of Frank Herbert’s Dune for the big screen. I’m eagerly awaiting his third entry which was announced back in April, while fans of the reboot can now take a gander at another offering in the cinematic universe now heading to streaming platform Max with six-part drama, Dune: Prophecy, based on the 2012 follow-up novel to Herbert’s literary IP. From the expansive universe of Dune, created by acclaimed author Frank Herbert, and 10,000 years before the ascension of Paul Atreides, DUNE: PROPHECY follows two Harkonnen sisters as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind, and establish the fabled sect that will become known as the Bene Gesserit. DUNE: PROPHECY is inspired by the novel SISTERHOOD OF DUNE, written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. The full cast includes Emily Watson, Olivia Williams, Travis Fimmel, Jodhi May, Mark Strong, Sarah-Sofie […]

Unlike some colleagues of his profession, mangaka Tsukasa Hojo has always been blessed with interesting adaptations of his work in his transitions to the audiovisual media. In 1993, we had the the first of the adaptations of his most famous manga, the iconic City Hunter, a Hong Kong production in which HK director and producer Wong Jing teamed up with Jackie Chan for a hilarious adventure that, despite not being completely faithful to the original material, It retained much of its essence, and gave us a fun visual spectacle that fans still remember with nostalgia. Three years later, Michael Chow starred in “Mr. Mumbles”, an unofficial adaptation, in which the names and part of the plot were changed but which maintained the original concept of the story. It was a year later when Cat’s Eye had its first live-action adaptation, in a Japanese production directed by Kaizo Hayashi, with Yuki […]
Filmmaker Pedring Lopez is getting a double dose of updates from a few projects. First up is a batch of stills from Sellblock, a new crime drama series which Lopez also produced via BlackOps Studios Asia, and Psyops8. Jericho Rosales (Basurero, Siargao, Pacquiao: The Movie) stars in the series which chronicles the activities of one of Asia’s biggest drug empires operating from inside a Philippines maximum-security prison. The cast also includes Empoy Marquez, Ronnie Lazaro, Mon Confiado, Maria Isabel Lopez, Ria Atayde, and Jaclyn Jose. Deadline covered the show when international sales agent Blue Fox took the show to MIPTV back in April: “Sellblock is more than just a series,” said Rosales. “It’s an immersive experience that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats. Working alongside such a talented team has been an absolute privilege, and I can’t wait for viewers to see the magic we’ve created.” Lopez […]
Rolling out this summer on Sky Max in the UK is new comedy series, Mr. Bigstuff. The official trailer is live as of this past week starring Ryan Sampson, and Danny Dyer in his TV debut. The six-part comedy explores broken families, fragile masculinity and carpet sales. It tells the story of two estranged brothers; Glen a nervy perfectionist striving to live the suburban ideal and Lee an alpha male with a prescription drug addiction and biscuit tin full of his Dad’s ashes. Glen and his fiancée share a perfect, perfectly mundane life together. Sure, Glen’s got crippling erectile dysfunction and Kirsty has a secret shoplifting habit, but they’re happy. That is until Lee comes crashing into their lives, whilst on the run from a past that’s quickly catching up with him. A twelve-episode series is in order at TV Tokyo for a continuation of the Baby Assassins franchise. Actors Akari Takaishi and Saori Izawa will reprise their roles as portrayed in the current films from writer/director Yugo Sakamoto. The announcement comes off the heels of the teaser for the third and latest feature installment, Baby Assassins: Nice Days, which arrives on September 27 in Japan. According to the film’s official website, the series will broadcast in the weeks leading up to the film’s release. In addition to Sakamoto, who is penning and directing the show, action director Kensuke Sonomura (Hydra, Bad City) will set the stage for the show’s action sequences. Plot details remain under wraps, as does the show’s broadcast plans outside Japan. 2021’s Baby Assassins became a mid-pandemic hit, following the killer exploits of two highly-skilled assassins, high school girls, Chisato, and Mahiro. Their resolve is tested upon gradutation when […]
Action is now streaming on Peacock. The past eleven years have given me quite the insight into covering stunts as part of my regular syllabus on this site. Getting to meet, talk to and occasionally hang out with stunt performers is an amazing add-on to what I do. The most interesting thing though, is the more industry-tethered work that producers venture in covering that field for documentary purposes. With any luck, the documentary films and shows covering stunts will finally motivate The Academy to make the stunt community whole by attributing a new awards category in its ceremony. It’s a talking point that continues to endure with the help of actors like Keanu Reeves, David Harbor, and Winston Duke who help spotlight these below-the-line screen heroes in Action, a new six-part hourlong documentary on Peacock. Directed by Chelsea Allen and Bridger Nielsen, Action ventures a look into the tireless work […]
