GUNS AKIMBO: Daniel Radcliffe Needs A Hand In The Rousing First Trailer!

Lee B. Golden III

Actress Samara Weaving has been a cinematic gift in recent memory with films like Mayhem, Ready Or Not and The Babysitter to name a few. This time, she’s got Daniel Radcliffe in her sights as an exponential killer in Guns Akimbo, from Deathgasm helmer Jason Lei Howden following strong turnouts at Toronto’s TIFF and at Fantastic Fest in Austin. Guns Akimbo sees Radcliffe leading the narrative as Miles, a socially awkward, obsequious loner swept into a city-wide, dark net-livestreamed game of death by a clandestine snuff film gang known as SKIZM. Awakening handicapped with two guns bolted into his hands, he’s pitted against Nix (Weaving), a seemingly unstoppable killing machine whom he manages to evade until his ex-girlfriend, Nova, is kidnapped. Now he must stop running and overcome his fear to fight for the girl he loves. The film is billed as an “adrenaline soaked balls-to-the-wall action comedy in the […]

THE BRAVEST Review: An Explosive Tale Of Crisis Management And Soul-Searching Redemption In A City On Fire

Lee B. Golden III

Fires, volcanic eruptions, deadly earthquakes and political turmoil encompass but a fraction of the global upheaval that has since carried into the new year. Thus, Tony Chan’s visually breathtaking thriller, The Bravest, couldn’t have come at a more introspective and opportune time for Chinese cinema as the industry mapped out a specific course in the last few years, segueing from military-themed vehicles to more rescue-centric narratives as seen in films like The Captain with Hanyu Zhang, and Dante Lam’s aptly-named The Rescue. At the crux of Chan’s heroic actioner, featuring the talents of Huang Xiaoming are some of the usual themes that are inherent to a film about a team of trained professionals chisled and engrained to face danger head-on, including paying homage to the lives of those who ply their trade in real life, as well as those who make the ultimate sacrifice in the process. MANHUNT: Franklin Correa’s Latest Thriller Launches On Multiple Platforms

Lee B. Golden III

Independent director, actor and martial artist Franklin Correa has managed to succeed quite a bit in his efforts in the last seven years I’ve observed his work. Characteristic of the kind of no-budget indie fare his films usually sit in, they definitely bare an unmistakable lackluster presentation in terms of production quality, which is bound to irk even the most optimistic moviegoer, and admittedly, the trailer above for new thriller, Manhunt, definitely alludes to this sort of reaction. Nevertheless, I’ve always given credence to his efforts along with that of his performers, in addition to the grist of his storytelling capacity. His latest no-budget crime drama oddity looks to present this very continued potential as it launched on Tuesday. The film is available to rent via YouTube, Amazon Prime and Xumo with a DVD release TBD. Manhunt centers on Conroy (Franklin Correa), a survivalist and combat instructor forced into a […]

MORBIUS Trailer Reveals A Moonlight Sonata Of Madness For The New Marvel/Sony Adaptation

Lee B. Golden III

Fresh off the comic book pages of another Marvel IP, the official trailer is out and about for Safe House director Daniel Espinoza’s new film, Morbius. Tackling the classic antihero for the big screen is actor Jared Leto whose last inglorious comic book outing as Joker in David Ayer’s Suicide Squad didn’t bode too well with the masses. Here, he gets a character all his own and with plenty of meat on the bones to fill up the bellies of fans still pining for more of what Sony can pony up from its Spider-Man and Venom millieu. One of Marvel’s most compelling and conflicted characters comes to the big screen as Oscar® winner Jared Leto transforms into the enigmatic antihero, Michael Morbius. Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder, and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble. What at first appears to be […]

Lee B. Golden III

The 70th Berlin Film Festival is just a little over a month away, and that should lend plenty of time for attendees and news outlets to take a gander at what’s in store. That includes Jeanette Nordahl’s rural crime thriller, Wildland (a.k.a. KØD & BLOD) which is picked up by French sales and distro company, Bac Films, and will screen for the festival’s Panorama section. Ingeborg Topsøe penned the Danish countryside thriller which introduces actress Sandra Guldberg Kampp in the role of Ida, an orphaned young girl taken in by her aunt and cousins following the death of her mother. As the official synopsis reads: “…all is full of love but it soon becomes clear that the clan engages in criminal activities.” The 70th Berlin Film Festival kicks off on February 20 through March 1. Wildland also stars Sidse Babett Knudsen, Joachim Fjelstrup, Elliott Crosset Hove and Besir Zeciri, and the […]

SPY INTERVENTION: A Spy’s Past Life Brings Double Trouble In The Official Trailer

Lee B. Golden III

It’s kind of True Lies, but in reverse and with a lower budget, really. Though the caliber of hijinks is definitely there in Drew Mylrea’s Spy Intervention which bowed its official trailer recently after its announcement late last year. Pic hails from Sprockefeller Productions and producer Sunil Perkash (Salt, Enchanted) and stars Drew Van Acker (TV’s “Pretty Little Liars”) as Corey Gage, the world’s greatest spy who meets the love of his life, Pam Grayson (Poppy Delevingne – Kingsman: The Golden Circle). When Corey chooses to trade in his action-packed life as a spy for the world of quaint, suburban dinner parties, time proves it doesn’t take long for Corey to become bored with his new normal and when an evil plot to ruin the world arises, he’s drawn back to his old life. Also starring are Blake Anderson, Brittany Furlan, Max Silvestri, Natasha Bassett, Brian Sacca, Dave Sheridan, and […]

DEATH TRAP: These Teens Don’t Have A Prayer In The Official Red Band Trailer

Lee B. Golden III

Ah, 1999. Growing pains were definitely abound that year, though they weren’t as rough as these teens have it in Deandra Spinner’s feature directing debut, Death Trap. The first trailer and poster are making the rounds this week from Emerald Wolf Studios, and features Bruce Klefstad, Emma Butler, Laith Wallschleger, Mercedes Gutierrez, Nicholas Denmon, Dafni Sufra and Troy Brookins. Death Trap follows the story of six friends on Halloween 1999 in what promises to be a night of mischief and debauchery. The night quickly turns sour when a deadly combination of Florida wildlife, inclement tropical weather and a youthful assumption of invincibility set the stage for an accident that leaves the group stranded in the dark interior of the night. Quick-tempered Jake disappears into the dark. Derek and Jamal search for their furious friend while the girls stay behind. Eventually, the girls’ patience wears thin and they set out to […]

TOMIRIS: Don’t Miss The Epic Trailer For Kazakhstan’s Period War Thriller

Lee B. Golden III

Last year’s releases may still be new news for folks outside of Kazakhstan like myself if the period adventure thriller, Tomiris, is new on your radar. The epic Herodotean tale opened last September, featuring actress Aizhan Lighg in the title role of the 6th century B.C. Massagetean Queen who united the Scythian/Saka tribes against the Achaemenid Empire led by Cyrus The Great, played by actor Gassan Massoud. There’s little reason to believe this film won’t hit the market scene at some point this year unless I missed something, but definitely keep an eye out for this one as it looks amazing. Peep the trailer above!

THE WINNERS: Prepardness Is Key In Da Peng’s New Crime Comedy

Lee B. Golden III

It’s been five years since actor Da Peng’s Jian Bing Man put him on my radar. I’ve yet to see that one as it was never granted the legit U.S. release it was announced for, though the actor himself has managed to maintain his trajectory some. The Journey To The West 2 and Vortex actor’s return to the big screen now brings us The Winners, opening next month in China. Peng plays Yanjin, an earnest and vexatious bank worker whose whose latest branch assignment has his co-workers training in robbery prepardness, and him, training to be a real bank robber for that reason. The trailer above isn’t English-subbed in the least, so site contributor Yi Christina Liu gave it a go and found it to be pretty enticing. She even pulled the last line of the trailer which reads as English in the following: “All our police are hungry and […]

THE NEW MUTANTS: Don’t Miss The Chilling New Trailer

Christina Ortega

Do you know what a mutant is? The New Mutants trailer dropped yesterday and before watching it, I would’ve said yes, I know what a mutant is. I grew up with the X-Men Saturday morning cartoons, comics, I’ve watched all the X-Men films (for better or worse). But this trailer…chills. There’s the mutants (obviously), the discovery of their powers, there’s horror…are they in a hospital to get better or something more sinister? If you haven’t seen it yet (what’s wrong with you?), here it is: 20th Century Fox in association with Marvel Entertainment presents “The New Mutants,” an original horror thriller set in an isolated hospital where a group of young mutants is being held for psychiatric monitoring. When strange occurrences begin to take place, both their new mutant abilities and their friendships will be tested as they battle to try and make it out alive. Josh Boone (The Fault […]

BLOCK Z

BLOCK Z: Don’t Miss The Official Trailer For Mikhail Red’s New Thriller

Lee B. Golden III

Celebrated director Mikhail Red rung in the new year in fine fashion with the new official trailer for his upcoming zombie horror, Block Z. Star Cinema is releasing the film to audiences at local Philippines theaters on January 29, marking another milestone for the young filmmaker best known for films like Rekorder, Birdshot, and Netflix’s fourth quarter stream release, Dead Kids. Block Z stars Joshua Garcia, Julia Barretto, McCoy de Leon, Maris Racal, and Yves Flores, and tells a harrowing tale of a disparate group of students who must band together if they are going to survive during a deadly viral infection outbreak at a quarantined university. THE KUNG FU MASTER: Kung Fu Fighters VS. Brooding Bikers In The Official Trailer

Lee B. Golden III

If Ram Gopal Varma’s upcoming Enter The Girl Dragon wasn’t enough to excite you for some favorable martial arts cinema from Southeast Asia, you may now turn over to the latest feat from now four-time filmmaker, Malayam writer/director Abrid Shine. Not a lot of originality for the title here of course, but The Kung Fu Master has arrived with its first official trailer just a week after unveiling key art ahead of a January release with actress Neeta Pillai, and actors Jiji Scaria and Sanoop D starring. Plot details are annoyingly scarce here but as far as what the trailer dishes out, I see kung fu fighters, brooding bikers, parkour, stylishly shot action, and fists hitting faces – an important element to any martial arts film these days. The Kung Fu Master is no exception, but it does meet the demand so far… Peep the trailer above and poster below.

JOHN HENRY: Black Folkloric Heroism Goes Modern Badass In The First Trailer

Lee B. Golden III

I can recall a time not too ancient when I would stumble onto comment threads about who would could play Luke Cage in a feature film or a series. Long before Mike Colter earned his cred for Netflix, I once advocated for actor Terry Crews as a possiblity, and…well… some cats laughed at the idea. Fast forward to the tail end of 2019 and far and away from all things Marvel and Netflix, Crews has his own prospects thanks to Saban Films’ acquistion of his new action drama, John Henry, as of August. Will Forbes is making his directorial debut featuring a brooding Crews in a titular modern-day take on a folkloric hero. Ex-gang member, John Henry (Terry Crews), traded violence for a quieter life taking care of his aging father (Ken Foree) in South Los Angeles. Henry meets two immigrant children running from his former gang leader (Chris “Ludacris: […]

TWIN BLADES: Li Ma Mops The Floor With Villains In The First Teaser

TWIN BLADES: Li Ma Mops The Floor With Villains In The First Teaser

Lee B. Golden III

I guess Lauren Shuler Donner had to keep the engine running in the last three years somehow as all developments on Gambit continued to lapse… Of course, that brings us to the latest teaser for female-fronted action comedy, Twin Blades, featuring Li Ma playing bodyguard to Beth Behrs’s powerful American entrepreneur, hand-in-hand as the two find themselves in a dangerous situation and must fight for survival while in China. Jin directs from a screenplay by Ingrid Eskeland-Adetuyi, and here to assert the film’s action comedy element is a day-dreamy Li Ma laying waste to the film’s bad guy population, but with a twist! Take a look above, along with a promo visual below!
