Writer and director Yugo Sakamoto’s new action thriller is well on the way with Baby Assassins: Nice Days, now third in line to a franchise that is also still growing with an upcoming spin-off drama in the works as well. The film just awarded its helmer the coveted Daniel A. Craft Award For Excellence In Action Cinema and, as we speak, is screening for eager Fantasia Festival attendees this week. The film rejoins Saori Izawa and Akari Takashi for another run as buddying assassin duo Chisato and Mahiro, whose latest work-cation hire soon pits them against a seemingly unbearable assassin, played by none other than Sosuke Ikematsu (The Last Samurai, Killing). The film also stars Atsuko Maeda and Otani Mondo, along with a new high energy title track that now stands incumbent with the film’s forthcoming marketing. I loved this film, and it just so happens that contributing writer Shaun […]
Antonia Bogdanovich’s revived new crime thriller, Sleep No More, is gearing up for a theatrical, digital and VOD release on Friday, July 26. Originally titled Phantom Halo and billed as a New York Times Critic’s Pick, the film marks a 10th-anniversary revamp of its 2014 original, with Bogdanovich reworking the material to produce a version that would convey her vision for the film. Warren Emerson (Sebastian Roché, Queen of Tears, 1923, Big Sky, The Man in the High Castle) once a Shakespearian thespian of renown, is now a gambling-addicted drunk. Puck-like Samuel (Thomas Brodie-Sangster, The Artful Dodger, The Maze Runner series, The Queen’s Gambit, Godless) enchants crowds on Santa Monica’s 3rd Street Promenade reciting Shakespearian monologues his father all but beat into him while his brother Beckett (Luke Kleintank, FBI: International, Midway, The Man in the High Castle), a master pickpocket, makes his way through the unsuspecting crowd. When Warren […]

Finding herself alone in the world, she quickly comes to discover the truth of her past: that her father was once a respected member of the Imperial Court who was murdered in cold blood, and that her […]
1997 Fuji TV cop drama, Bayside Shakedown, was precisely the spark that lit the flame for its success over the years, spawning mutiple TV and film projects. This especially goes for actor and franchise fixture Toshiro Yanagiba who now returns for a brand new pair of back-to-back legacy entries into the “Bayside Shakedowniverse”. Thus, the latest official trailer is online courtesy of Toho for Muroi Shinji: The Undefeated, which on October 11, followed by Muroi Shinji: Stay Alive, on November 15. The films are written by Ryoichi Kimizuka, and directed by Katsuyuki Motohiro, both who have been in-and-out with the Bayside Shakedown franchise since its roots on the small screen. The new films culminate around Shinji’s retirement as Tokyo police superintendent as he returns to his home town to support the families of victims of crimes. When a mysterious young girl appears and the body of a murder victim surfaces, […]
The 50th Deauville American Film Festival is just months away, arriving in time for the theatrical rollout of Elliot Lester’s new Western, The Thicket. The film is a Tubi Original, written by Chris Kelly and based on Joe R. Lansdale’s 2013 novel, and stars a badass, gunslinging, shot-calling Peter Dinklage opposite a chiseled, monstrous villain iterated in awesome Juliette Lewis-fashion. When fierce bounty hunter Reginald Jones (Peter Dinklage) is recruited by a desperate man to track down a ruthless killer known only as Cutthroat Bill (Juliette Lewis), he rallies a band of unlikely heroes including a grave-digging ex-slave and a street-smart woman-for-hire. Together they embark on a perilous quest to track down Cutthroat Bill that leads them into the deadly “no-man’s-land” known as…The Thicket. Yeah, this trailer is just badass. Dinklage kickass and Lewis is the villain to beat. The script crackles here and I think the Deauville crowd are […]

Denis Villeneuve has been a godsend with his revival of Frank Herbert’s Dune for the big screen. I’m eagerly awaiting his third entry which was announced back in April, while fans of the reboot can now take a gander at another offering in the cinematic universe now heading to streaming platform Max with six-part drama, Dune: Prophecy, based on the 2012 follow-up novel to Herbert’s literary IP. From the expansive universe of Dune, created by acclaimed author Frank Herbert, and 10,000 years before the ascension of Paul Atreides, DUNE: PROPHECY follows two Harkonnen sisters as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind, and establish the fabled sect that will become known as the Bene Gesserit. DUNE: PROPHECY is inspired by the novel SISTERHOOD OF DUNE, written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. The full cast includes Emily Watson, Olivia Williams, Travis Fimmel, Jodhi May, Mark Strong, Sarah-Sofie […]
These days, if a film were to heavily feature, say, someone in a wheelchair (besides, perhaps, Charles Xavier), it wouldn’t be long before it was bombarded with cries of “woke!” or “leftism gone mad!”. Back in 1980, this wasn’t the case. In fact, in 1980, exploitation cinema was still thriving. These films often toed the line, highlighting more taboo subjects, such as sex crimes, racism, homosexuality and, of course, extreme violence, as well as many more. Exploitation became its own genre, despite being comprised of several other genres. There’s action exploitation, horror exploitation, Blaxploitation, exploitation porn (which seems redundant, I suppose)… The list goes on. Kung fu cinema has always been mildly exploitational. Or at least it’s gently held hands with exploitation throughout its existence. Sammo Hung often liked to make his films gritty with the inclusion of a rape scene or two, many martial arts films feature animal cruelty, […]
Director Lee Myung-hoon’s new action comedy thriller, Mission: Cross, was something that I had my eye on earlier this year and wondered about. Of course Netflix would be the ones to quietly snap it up and now we have an August 9 worldwide launch date set for the streamer. In the ultimate test of marriage, an agent-turned-househusband gets tangled in a perilous mission with his detective wife, who’s clueless about his past. Yum Jung-ah and Hwang Jung-min star along with Jeon Hye-jin, Jung Man-shik, and Kim Chan-hyung. Check out the trailer!
John Woo is back again. I enjoyed his most recent entry with Silent Night, and while I’m certain opinions will stir today as the official trailer for Woo’s The Killer makes the rounds, I’m optimistic. From the Oscar® winning producer of Oppenheimer, the kinetic action thriller stars Emmy nominee Nathalie Emmanuel (The Fast Saga, Game of Thrones) as Zee, a mysterious and infamous assassin known, and feared, in the Parisian underworld as the Queen of the Dead. But when, during an assignment from her shadowy mentor and handler (Avatar’s Sam Worthington), Zee refuses to kill a blinded young woman (Diana Silvers; Ma, Booksmart) in a Paris nightclub, the decision will disintegrate Zee’s alliances, attract the attention of a savvy police investigator (Golden Globe nominee Omar Sy; Jurassic World franchise, Lupin), and plunge her into a sinister criminal conspiracy that will set her on a collision course with her own past. […]
Screening this Friday as part of the Japan Cuts line-up is Cha-Cha from director Mai Sakai. The film marks the latest contribution to the (not)Heroine Project, which focuses on up-and-coming directors like Sakai who now hails audiences with her fifth feature. Cha-Cha is an illustrator working at a design office. Her free-spirited behavior sometimes draws the ire of those around her, but she lives by the motto, “I don’t let me worry about what others think any more, just live the way I want”. One day, Cha-Cha meets Raku on the rooftop and she becomes interested in him. Although they are opposites in terms of their tastes, she gradually becomes attracted to Raku, thinking that “we two get along perfect”. What will happen to the unpredictable romance of a stray cat-like girl? A fashionable, tasteful and bizarre story. I will say the film is definitely unpredictable at times even for […]

The arrival of Baby Assassins 2 to the Hi-YAH! streamer couldn’t have come at a better time. With a spin-off series drama in the works and a third film already making the festival rounds, the Yugo Sakamoto-directed franchise remains one of the most popular of its kind with its energizing lead cast, quirky and off-beat humor, and stellar action that crackles with each gun battle and hand-to-hand fight scene. Well Go USA is the North American home to the franchise thusfar having already released the first two films on home media, as well as its adjacent streamer. The second film returns Akari Takaishi and Saori Izawa in the respective roles of Chisato and Mahiro, two coming-of-age guilded members of an assassin organization still struggling to live life responsibly while intercepting two rival assassins from another company, played by Tatsuomi Hamada and Joey Iwanaga. Read my review for the film by […]

Unlike some colleagues of his profession, mangaka Tsukasa Hojo has always been blessed with interesting adaptations of his work in his transitions to the audiovisual media. In 1993, we had the the first of the adaptations of his most famous manga, the iconic City Hunter, a Hong Kong production in which HK director and producer Wong Jing teamed up with Jackie Chan for a hilarious adventure that, despite not being completely faithful to the original material, It retained much of its essence, and gave us a fun visual spectacle that fans still remember with nostalgia. Three years later, Michael Chow starred in “Mr. Mumbles”, an unofficial adaptation, in which the names and part of the plot were changed but which maintained the original concept of the story. It was a year later when Cat’s Eye had its first live-action adaptation, in a Japanese production directed by Kaizo Hayashi, with Yuki […]
