Filmart 2026: COLD WAR 1994 Chills Its Way Online With New Character Posters
Until now, we’ve only had a brief teaser and a few teaser posters to help carry us over ahead of the releases of cop procedural prequels Cold War 1994 and Cold War 1995. On Wednesday, Edko Films stepped it up a notch in a big way, announcing a bevy of Hong Kong stars lining up the cast in a slew of character posters for the first of the two back-to-back tales which you can view at the bottom of the page.
Per the trades out of Hong Kong Filmart, Longman Leung is directing Cold War 1994 with a cast led by Daniel Wu, Terrance Lau, Tse Kwan Ho and Louise Wong, in addition to Wu Kang Ren, Tse Kwan Ho, Louise Wong, Fish Liew, Aidan Gillen and Hugh Bonneville. Actors Chow Yun Fat, Aaron Kwok, and Tony Leung Ka Fai are back and reprising their roles from the earlier installments, and with actor Louis Koo making his entry into the franchise.
The Leung-directed thriller which proceeds his work on the first two Cold War films with co-helmer Sunny Luk. Releasing in 2012 and 2016 respectively, the films featured Kwok and Leung along with Eddie Peng, and followed the explosive events of an operation to rescue captives following the theft of Police Emergency Unit van, unraveling a terroristic conspiracy that consumes both the Management and Operations arms of the Police.
Cold War 1994 expands on this universe with a story that focuses on M.B. Lee (Lau, in a younger iteration of Leung’s character), the acting Chief Superintendent of the Organized Crime and Triad Bureau, as he navigates corruption and bureucracy amid a 1994 Hong Kong tycoon kidnapping investigation, and the ensuing financial turmoil before the handover. Production hails from Edko Films Ltd. (Hong Kong, China) and Wuxi Jiaxiong Film Co., Ltd., Edko (Beijing) Film Distribution Co., Ltd.
Edko’s Bill Kong and Ivy Ho, who produced both films, are back aboard the franchise for the two new films, and were on hand at Filmart to present the new installation into the franchise along with the director.
Kong described the film as more than just a prequel: “While sequels move the story forward, this prequel goes deeper. We are returning to the very source of the Cold War universe, revealing how the power reshuffle in 1994 planted the seeds for everything that followed.”
Leung added that clues to the 1994 storyline had been carefully planted since the first film: “Beneath the surface calm of that era lay treacherous undercurrents. Through a grander narrative canvas, audiences will finally witness the true origins of the Cold War world and uncover answers to many long-standing mysteries.”
Release dates for both Cold War follow-ups remain pending with post-production currently underway. Check out the character posters in the slideshow below and read more at Deadline.
