FINAL MISSION Trailer: Legendary Ex-Stuntman Masashi Takahashi Braves The Action Genre Once More In The New Year!
I find my interest piqued a bit this morning as I post this with a 2016 film directed by Shunji Muguruma. If given the opportunity, I’ll delve into it for another article, while the moment currently presents a look at latest work from the director in espionage action thriller, Final Mission, which will bow before audiences in Japan beginning January 16.
Domon, a former member of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force, once led a special forces unit dispatched to Eastern Europe. To conceal a tragedy that occurred on the battlefield, he lives a life isolated from society with his former subordinate, Kazuo Namioka, who suffers from PTSD. Two years later, Kazuo’s former fiancée is murdered, and Domon learns that the culprit is Ken Hamada, the CEO of a cutting-edge robotics company. Meanwhile, Koharu, a journalist searching for her missing brother Kazuo, contacts Domon and eventually tracks down Kazuo’s whereabouts. Koharu blames Domon for the cause of the tragedy, but at that time, a highly skilled assassin “Z,” hired by Hamada to bury everything in darkness, is about to be sent in. Furthermore, a conspiracy begins to stir behind the scenes…
Final Mission is a collaborative effort between Stunt Team Gocoo (Kingdom: Return Of The Great General, Under Ninja) and Shadow Stunt Production (Last Mile, G-Men), and with a cast led by legendary former stuntman Masashi Takahashi, who retired from stunts in 2024, and just announced an ongoing battle with cancer this month. Takahashi was also involved in Muguruma’s 2023 effort, Lone Wolf, in which the famed fall guy also starred with actor Shota Minami, and also served as producer.
Takahashi is joined on screen by Maru Riona, Kanta, Shoji Kurata, Ryosuke Yusa, Nanami Hidaka, and Yuki Meguro. Catch the trailer below:
