MORTAL KOMBAT Gets New Story Details, Character Descriptions And More

It’s been a few years since we learned of a director getting attached to an upcoming live-action reinstallment of hit fighting game IP, Mortal Kombat. Simon McQuoid is set to direct the film that many a fan have waited up to twenty years for and now with word exclusively from That Hashtag Show on Monday, there appears to be some character descriptions in our midst.

The news comes following recent online buzz regarding potential filming locations in Chicago and overseas in New Zealand.

First and foremost comes a likely reshaping of any expectations there intially might have been in terms of plot with James Wan still on board and producing. Greg Russo completed the latest script which, according to the aforementioned source, will introduce a new character in the form of Cole, a Philidelphia boxer who is recuited by a prophecy chaser to compete in the epic tournament deciding the fate of Earth and mankind.

The report lists the following descriptions of our protagonist, his family and The Overseer as follows:

COLE TURNER

Lead Male. 30s. A brand new character to the MK franchise. Cole is a struggling and widowed boxer who cares more about his young daughter than anything. He is incredibly determined and refuses to quit in the face of fantastical adversity.

THE OVERSEER

Male. Late 80’s. The overseer of the clock tower and the training grounds that house the Earth realm warriors, he is laughably old.

EMILY

Female. 12. Cole’s scrappy, determined, and wise-beyond-her-years daughter.

SOPHIA

Female. 60s. Cole’s understanding, discerning mother-in-law who houses Emily and is her primary guardian.

JESS

Female. 30-35. Cole’s judgmental sister-in-law, who believes Cole to be a selfish, bad father. She lives with Sophia and Emily.

The report has also listed characters from the game that are apparently pending for the film. My guess is this could be the start of a new franchise, and though there may be some brouhaha over the sudden change of story compared to the old “rooting for Liu” angle, the addition of Cole doesn’t seem very problematic, particularly for a game franchise that thrives on bringing in new blood… that is…well… after spilling so much.

Check out the character descriptions below and let’s look forward to some solid Mortal Kombat movie news ahead!
