Report: IKATAN DARAH Sequel In The Works, Iko Uwais Circling Potential Role
A sequel is reportedly in the works to Indonesian action thriller, Ikatan Darah. The news was revealed by Asian Movie Pulse writer Panos Kotzathanasis over the weekend on Sunday, in a report detailing the country’s flourishing film industry over the past decade in association with megastreamer, Netflix.
The report also iterates the sequel could have action star Iko Uwais (The Night Comes For Us, Beyond Skyline) joining the cast “in a major antagonist role depending on audience reception;” KG Pictures and Legacy Pictures are producers on the inaugural action thriller, as well as Uwais’s production label, Uwais Pictures, which commences its theatrical output slate this week with hostage action thriller, Timur, in which Uwais stars and makes his feature directorial debut.
Ikatan Darah screened firstly at the 20th edition of Fantastic Fest, prior to playing before audiences earlier this month at the 20th Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival where it won Best Production Design. Directed by Tata, Bonnie breakout Livi Ciananta and actor Derby Romero lead the martial arts thriller which follows a former champion forced to take up her skills once more to defend her brother when he commits a desperate act of violence against his loanshark.
It is not clear if Netflix will be involved in the Ikatan Darah sequel, or if the streamer has acquired the title for pending release. Kotzathanasis’s report, however, does share that Tata is in development on another project with Uwais’s stunt training unit, Uwais Team, in addition to shooting new action project for Netflix.
Uwais, should he join the Ikatan Darah sequel, will mark the actor’s lively return to the platform since Roel Reiné’s 2022 “Wu Assassins” successor, Fistful Of Vengeance. The headlining genre favorite of The Raid franchise and star of Liam O’Donnell’s upcoming Skyline: Warpath, is already set to join O’Donnell for hostage thriller MRI, in addition to Ilya Naishuller’s Road House 2 for Amazon MGM Studios.
