SHIRI Trailer: Kang Je-Gyu’s Propulsive Spy Thriller Classic Gets A 4K Relaunch This Month!
Korean cinema was an acquired taste for me back in the early days of the DVD, but ultimately Kang Je-gyu’s 1999 espionage thriller, Shiri, grew on me. Sony Pictures handled its U.S. home media release a few years later, and it’s only within the last few years that the film finally got the 4K restorative treatment that folks might have been looking forward to.
That version had its premiere at the Tokyo International Film Festival to commemorate the film’s 25th anniversary a few years back with Kang in attendance, followed by the film’s select theatrical release through GAGA a year later. To this, the film is now coming home for its Korean theatrical 4K debut on March 19. CJ ENM is handling the film’s release and they’ve since brandished an official trailer ripe for the occasion.
Shiri takes place during an intense period between the North and the South. Agents Ryu (Han Suk-kyu) and Lee (Song Kang-ho) are on a mission to hunt down sleeper agents infiltrating the region, namely their mysterious and elusive target known only as “Shiri”. With a binary liquid explosive in play and commandos terrorizing the city, little do Ryu and Lee know that uncovering the truth may bring them closer to danger than they think.
The film also stars Choi Min-sik, Kim Yunjin, and Park Ha, and opens in Korean cinemas on March 19. Check out the trailer below, as well as a pair of posters just beneath.
