The scene is heating up over in Monrovia, California for the upcoming festivities at this year’s tenth annual Action On Film International Film Festival. As such, many shortfilms and other projects that get made beforehand are held exclusively by their originators until they are finished circulating. That standard was since extended to Germany-based cinematic stunt team, Reel Deal Action, who have currently been busy working on a few feature films this year while circulating their newest action short festival favorite, Evil Twin, directed by Epicman Productions founder Christian Pfeil.
Evil Twin centers on Reel Deal member, movie stuntman and actor Cha-Lee Yoon, who finds himself at an impasse with his own brother, played by Phong Giang. Upon entering, Yoon discovers his fellow cohort, bound and bloodied by his own evil twin (both played by Can Aydin), following the successful robbery of two technologically advanced stones that grant their owners the ability to teleport almost anywhere and everywhere. With the power of these stones at stake, a spectacular battle ensues that sends our actors on an epic martial arts brawl across time and space in the ultimate fight for who will control the gang, and the powerful stones they stole.
Evil Twin bares some pretty grand qualities in its production size and scale. It takes a very mature and comprehensive approach to certain story telling elements I’ve seen before, and maintains its freshness through its heavy-handed, hard-hitting fight sequences. The drama is minimal and there isn’t much dialogue to between all the performers involved as they placed much more emphasis in applying their biggest and most important strength – the martial arts action. Nevertheless, despite working in some truly grueling cold weather conditions while maintaining an artistic agenda through a rough, non-consecutive ten day shoot last year, Pfeil did a really terrific job in streamlining this project from start to finish. And to top it off, the short turned out to be pretty well acted and executed in its amazing fight choreography between Aydin, Yoon and Giang, making Evil Twin a true gem to look forward to when the world finally gets to see it.
Nominations are going out this week for all AoF 2014 entries, including Evil Twin, which has been nominated for Best Action Sequence-Martial Arts and Action Short Of The Year. Festival attendees will be able to catch the short film during its Short Killer Action Block run on August 28 just a few days before the festival ends.
