SLEEPING DOGS: Timo Tjahjanto Will Direct The Adaptation Starring Simu Liu
Anyone following Timo Tjahjanto and actor Simu Liu on the socials will have been made aware of the albeit vivid moves they’ve been making on the pre-production front of the live-action Sleeping Dogs film. As of this week, the word is out via the Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star that Tjahjanto will direct the film.
Tjahjanto is best known for surfacing in the past decade as one of the most prolific directors hailing from Southeast Asia, sharing directing credits with Kimo Stamboel on films like Macabre, Killers, and Headshot, and soloing thrillers like The Night Comes For Us, and both installments of the May the Devil Take You saga. He’s also directed memorable actioners The Night Comes For Us, The Big 4, and The Shadow Strays, as well as Universal Pictures’ Nobody 2, and the upcoming sequel to 2024’s The Beekeeper.
The news comes after the departure of Donnie Yen from the project back in January after his attachment in 2017. Fast forward to 2025 with Liu positing himself with the project this year on multiple occasions, recording its progress with Story Kitchen spearheading development.
The original game launched in 2012 and follows Wei Shen, an undercover cop on a mission to fight his way up the Triads while not blowing his cover. Actor Will Yun Lee voiced the part for the game’s release.
