Sony’s SILVER AND BLACK Lands A 2019 Release; More Dates/Changes Announced For Other Titles

Casting news remains pending on Silver And Black, one of Sony Pictures’s currently-brewing Marvel adaptations for which Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love & Basketball, The Secret Life Of Bees, Freeform’s Cloak & Dagger – pilot) will direct. Until then, the word now is that the studio has officiated several release dates for up-and-coming titles, including the new comic book adaptation which Bythewood is penning from Thor scribe Christopher Yost’s previous draft.

A February 8, 2019 has been bookmarked for Silver And Black, for which Sony’s Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal are producing with Columbia Pictures executives Palak Patel and Eric Fineman are overseeing. Silver Sable (a.k.a. Silver Sablinova) was launched at Marvel in 1985, created by Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz. Skilled in weapons, hand-to-hand combat and strategy, she leads the Wild Pack, a group of mercenaries whose m.o. is to hunt down international war crimimals, while her loyalty to Spider-Man in the comics is known to be fleeting.

Sable is a character lesser known in the comics compared to Black Cat, launched in 1971 by Keith Pollard and Marv Wolfman and who shares a deeper, complicated romantic history with the popular wall-crawling hero from Queens. Black Cat (a.k.a. Felicia Hardy) was the daughter of a world-renowned cat burglar and became her alter-ego after surviving a traumatic experience, ultimately forging her prowess in fighting and acrobatics.

Silver & Black is being conceived seperately from the studio’s current advancement of actor Tom Holland’s titular portrayal of third-time effort, Spider-Man, now per Marvel’s MCU at Walt Disney Pictures. The film will follow Zombieland helmer Reuben Fleischer’s forthcoming Venom movie which has Tom Hardy starring and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story co-star Riz Ahmed in talks for a yet undisclosed role.

Sony has also switched and removed dates for other titles: Releasing in place of the long-gestating/now undated Bad Boys For Life on November 9, 2018 is Etan Cohen’s Holmes & Watson with Step Brothers pair Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly starring. Stefano Sollima’s Soldado will bow on June 29, 2018 with Benecio Del Toro and Josh Brolin reprising their roles from Denis Villeneuve’s hit crime thriller, Sicario. Michelle MacLaren’s feature World War II novel adaptation, The Nightingale will has moved back its August 10, 2018 date to January 25, 2019. (Deadline via Exhibitor Relations)
