Streaming Sleepers: In DESPERADO, Danny Chan Slays In A Suit!
I’m gonna start paying a little more attention to director Cheng Si Yi. Beyond Striking Rescue, admittedly, I’ve been slacking, but not for a lack of trying to avoid doing so – there are just way to many movies out there for me to watch and try and keep up with.
Thankfully, our own Mike Garcia covered some ground when he was able to check out Danny Chan actioner, Desperado (or “Thug In A Suit” as translated from its initial title), long prior to its release in the states. You guys are more than welcome to peep his thoughts here, but the film has been streaming stateside for awhile now on Hi-YAH!, and it’s really more of a blast than I thought it would be.
Chan is best known for his Bruce Lee-likeness as seen in Shaolin Soccer, as well as his direct portrayal in CCTV-1 series “The Legend of Bruce Lee,” and in the third and fourth Ip Man films. Here, the actor gets to shed that persona for a turn more darker and grittier in Cheng’s action thriller, set in a fictional Asian city where a professional killer and ex-con moonlights as a street clown while protecting a cop’s daughter from thugs looking for an incriminating thumb drive.
Desperado comes neatly woven together with terrific action and worthwhile performances, and a stunning twist that makes you wish the ending didn’t play out as uncertain as it does. It’s crazy. I’ll end it here before I say too much, but Desperado delivers the goods. It’s definitely one of those streaming titles you wouldn’t expect to have had that much fun with if you didn’t know any better, and I’m glad I picked up on it recently.
Stream this bad boy over at Hi-YAH! today. Also starring are Shi Yanneng, Miya Muqi, Ken Lok and Luo Liqun, and Wang Bao Tong
