STREET FIGHTER Nabs Director For The New Live-Action Adaptation
This has been circulating among folks in the know for a while now but the word is Kitao Sakurai is helming Street Fighter for Legendary and Capcom. The move comes two years since the project was announced at the studio, followed by the attachment and last year’s subsequent detachment of Talk To Me film duo Danny and Michael Philippou.
The 80s tournament fighting game IP from Capcom culminating character favorites like Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Vega, Sagat, and M. Bison, spans six entries with multiple variants and editions. Universal Pictures birthed a live-action adaptation in 1994 starring Jean-Claude Van Damme from director Steven de Souza, with Joey Ansah taking the helm for Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist, a webserial/feature film that for some reason out of magical thinking the trades refuse to mention in most of their coverage… Interesting.
Sakurai’s credits include working on “The Eric Andre Show,” as well as season two of the Netflix/A24 series “Beef” and upcoming Amazon Prime Video series “Butterfly,” as well as “Twisted Metal” for Peacock.
Sony is inking a March 20, 2026 release, with cast and crew details still pending.
