I don’t typically do horror, but I love a good, intense, well-made thriller in the various subsets of the genre. In particular, I love what Fede Álvarez accomplished with Alien: Romulus, which is currently streaming on Hulu. Cailee Spaeny was incredible in the front-and-center role of action heroine Rain Carradine, who along with adopted brother and Weyland-Yutani android, Andy, played by David Jonsson, pair up with a ragtag group of survivors to leave their unyielding work colony on LV-410 and head for the serene planet Yvaga. What they don’t know is that the abandoned station for which they’ve just commandeered is full of hibernating xenomorphs eager to do what they do best: Hunt and breed, using humans as incubators to kill and consume anything living or breathing, and in their way. I haven’t seen Prometheus or Alien: Covenant, so those are on my watchlist to take in at some point […]
Twentieth Century Studios has finally unveiled the official trailer for Fede Alvarez’s Alien: Romulus. A franchise revival coming to theaters August 16, the film stars Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu, with a script by Alvarez and by Rodo Sayagues. While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe. The trailer below looks fresh and inviting. It starts about as gruesome as you might expect but without giving away the goods, all before touting Alvarez’s work. The rest of it is pure cake with epic spectacle and intensity, building all the way up to a sweet little Alien roar up-close and personal. This one’s for the fans, clearly. Take a look!
Wes Ball’s three-part adaptation of James Dashner’s “Maze Runner” was a bookmark in post-Twilight YA fanfare success for 20th Century Fox at the time. Suffice it to say though, it still feels too soon to discuss a reboot at this point, but it’s expected given the current environment with studios’ prominent reliance on IPs over original concepts. Indeed, a reboot is in the works over at the same studio ten years after the first film released to the masses. 20th Century Studios is shepherding the efforts with Jack Paglen (Transcendence) writing the screenplay, and Ball back on board this time as producer. Dylan O’Brien and Kaya Scodelario led the cast of the three films which chronicle a group of teen survivors as their battle their way through a dystopian world after conquering a maze surrounded by deadly traps and robotic creatures. As THR’s Borys Kit notes, “The hope is to […]
Evil Dead and Don’t Breathe 1 & 2 director Fede Alvarez is staking his claim in one of the most celebrated sci-fi franchises in history. For this, we turn to a debut look at Alien: Romulus which opens in theaters on August 16 from Twentieth Century Studios. Alvarez directs from a script he penned with Rodo Sayagues for a cast that lists Cailee Spaeny, David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, Spike Fearn, and Aileen Wu. Of course, we have (per the usual) a shit ton of facehuggers and unfriendly xenomorphs to welcome the occasion, and is that Ms. Spaeny in the teaser footage below with an M41A? Word??! The sci-fi/horror-thriller takes the phenomenally successful “Alien” franchise back to its roots: While scavenging the deep ends of a derelict space station, a group of young space colonizers come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe. The […]
Dan Trachtenberg’s Prey was an engrossing hit in 2022 upon its release on Hulu, and the word now is that he’s on board with another standalone film in the Predator universe this time with Badlands from 20th Century Studios. He is still in development with a sequel to Prey as well which could see actress Amber Midthunter reprise her role as the daring heroine that took on the intergalactic killer stalking her Commanche tribe. As for Badlands, there are no other plot or casting details with Friday’s news. Badlands and the in-development Prey sequel mark the latest potential additions to the saga since its theatrical launch of Predator from 20th Century Fox in 1987 from director John McTiernan, and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger and the late Carl Weathers, and introducing late costume actor Kevin Peter Hall in the iconic title role. “Legacies don’t come easy.” That’s the tagline introduced on the first poster for The Bikeriders, the newest crime drama from writer-director Jeff Nichols coming to theaters December 1 following its Telluride screening late last month. The film stars Jodie Comer and Austin Butler, and actor Tom Hardy, along with Michael Shannon, Mike Faist and Norman Reedus. Kathy, a strong-willed member of the Vandals who’s married to a wild, reckless bikerider named Benny, recounts the Vandals’ evolution over the course of a decade, beginning as a local club of outsiders united by good times, rumbling bikes, and respect for their strong, steady leader Johnny. Over the years, Kathy tries her best to navigate her husband’s untamed nature and his allegiance to Johnny, with whom she feels she must compete for Benny’s attention. As life in the Vandals gets more dangerous, and the club threatens to become a more sinister gang, Kathy, […]
From the director of the surprise hit ‘STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE’ (2016) comes what looks to be an intriguing post-apocalyptic film exploring the human drama amidst a horrific conflict between humans and robots. Although that premise is nothing new, given the last decade the idiosyncrasy stems from the relationship between the weathered special forces soldier played by John David Washington and his adopted child – who happens to be a robot. Tensions arise as the new father, is forced to choose between the fate of humanity and his new ward. Evidently English director Gareth Edwards has cut his teeth specifically on the science fiction genre, apart from the kaiju revamp that was ‘GODZILLA’ (2014) but what he has devised here could almost be the sci-fi equivalent of ‘ROAD TO PERDITION’ (2002). However, with automation becoming more and more prevalent in contemporary society this film may also offer a bleak message about AI […]
It’s been close to fifteen years since efforts began to try and revamp John Carpenter’s 1981 classic, Escape From New York. Rights have been changing hands with different directors and stars circling the film and now the latest movement sees Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Tyler Gillett and Chad Villella – a.k.a. Radio Silence (Ready Or Not, Scream 2022) on board to direct the film for 20th Century Studios. The trio will produce the pic alongside The Picture Company’s own Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman. Carpenter, who directed the original featuring Kurt Russell as outlaw war hero Snake Plissken, forced to infiltrate the dystopian walled prison city of New York and rescue the U.S. President or face death from an explosive device in his neck, is exec producing the title whose rights in other territories outside of the U.S. will be handled by France’s Studiocanal. A filmmaker for more than fifteen years, it wasn’t until the 2019 rescue actioner, Furie, that the name, Le-Van Kiet, began registering for a lot of fans beyond the Vietnamese market. This ought to be stated with much credit to North American distributor Well Go USA for doing a more than ample job in proliferating its director, as well as its star, Veronica Ngo, as we now look at one of their latest endeavors expanding further into the West with The Princess, a script by Ben Lustig and Jake Thornton that proffers a fresh, edgy, subversive and satisfyingly violent new take on childhood fairytales. It’s a script that landed right in the prospective hands of actress Joey King, who also gets to share the role of executive producer through her All The King’s Horses banner alongside the likes of Neal Moritz at Original Film. The film is also the latest […]
The next chapter is on the horizon for the long-celebrated sci-fi staple that is Predator, and with none other than Dan Trachtenberg’s latest out of 20th Century Studios, Prey, set for its August 5 premiere on Hulu. The Ice Road actress Amber Midthunder stars from a script by Patrick Aison which sets our story 300 years ago in the Commanche nation. She plays Naru, a fierce and highly skilled warrior raised in the shadow of some of the most legendary warriors who roam the Great Plains. When danger threatens her camp, she sets out to protect her people, but when the danger she confronts turns out to be a highly evolved and murderous alien with technologically advanced weaponry, it results in a vicious and terrifying showdown. Also starring are Dakota Beavers, Michelle Thrush and Julian Black Antelope.
Initially under the working title, Skulls, we now have a first look teaser for Dan Trachtenberg’s own take on “Predator” with the new film, Prey. The film stars a cast almost entirely comprised of Native and First Nations talent, including Amber Midthunder (The Ice Road, Roswell, New Mexico), and newcomer Dakota Beavers, along with Stormee Kipp (Sooyii), Michelle Thrush (The Journey Home), and Julian Black Antelope (Tribal). Set in the Comanche Nation 300 years ago, “Prey” is the story of a young woman, Naru, a fierce and highly skilled warrior. The prey she stalks, and ultimately confronts, turns out to be a highly evolved alien predator with a technically advanced arsenal, resulting in a vicious and terrifying showdown […]

The future is bright for the Alien saga with television prospects currently looking toward a different angle on things. TCA coverage last month via the trades revealed that forthcoming treatment of the franchise for the small screen will be nil to do with the character, Ripley, iconically portrayed by actress Sigourney Weaver for all four films from directors Ridley Scott, James Cameron, David Fincher and Jean-Pierre Jeunet. For what it’s worth, the same could be said for what lies ahead with the next feature installment now in development according to The Hollywood Reporter‘s Borys Kit, with news that Don’t Breathe, 2013’s Evil Dead and The Girl In The Spider’s Web helmer Fede Alvarez, a self-proclaimed fan of the franchise who reportedly “casually” pitched to Ridley Scott many years ago and “didn’t have to be asked twice” when Scott called him out of the blue late last year about directing, is […]
A Free Guy sequel is confirmed in development at 20th Century Studios, as confirmed by studio president Steve Asbell in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday. The interview, published by Borys Kit, focused on Asbell’s own 20th anniversary with 20th Century, it’s addition into the Disney family, and its future going forward with films in both theatrical and streaming mediums. In response to Kit’s question regarding how many productions would be planned annually, Asbell noted that the studio is “navigating the marketplace like everyone else”, citing there would be two or three movies in development per year with IPs such as Avatar, Planet of the Apes and Free Guy having “well-established theatrical precedence for a wide audience.” On the film’s status he adds: “We’re awaiting a script that is days away. It’s a fantastic story.” Free Guy finally theatrically released in August last year after multiple delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic. […]
Dan Trachtenberg (10 Cloverfield Lane) is being tapped to direct the next installment of the Predator franchise. News hints the new film will take a different trajectory than the previous 2018 thriller, The Predator, which Shane Black directed. The franchise has been a cult hit for fans ever since John McTiernan directed the 1987 inaugural starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, who played the leader of a merc unit that find themselves way in over their heads as they’re pitted in the jungles against a supernatural killer on the hunt. Developments are pending. More at Deadline.
Deadpool 3 is still in its nascency following its confirmation of development with Marvel by Ryan Reynolds late last year. Nevertheless, Justin Kroll’s latest exclusive at Deadline is nothing short of a sparkling reminder that the film is insofar definitely happening, with word that sibling scribe duo Lizzie Molyneux-Loeglin and Wendy Molyneux (Bob’s Burgers, animated comedy “The Great North,”) have been tapped to write the next installment. The franchise has been a major box office success up to this point with Tim Miller and David Leitch directing the 2016 and 2018 films, respectively, with Ryan Reynolds staking his claim as the titular merc-with-a-mouth based on Rob Liefield’s longstanding hit comic book creation. Reynolds is also a producer on the pic, and though a director still yet to be attached, the Molyneuxes’ involvement ought to serve as a nice little stocking stuffer going into the Holiday season for Deadpool fans. It also […]
