Between November of 2012 and now, it’s pretty safe to say that the production of director Jacob Cheng‘s 3D fantasy action epic, The White-Haired Witch Of Lunar Kingdom has had its fair share of issues. The five-month filming process was completed earlier last year with the goal of releasing it domestically last December until it was pushed to three months ago. Needless to say, the film was pushed back again and is now headed for a theatrical premiere on the week of July 31. It’s likely that the production extensions may have been due to a number of post-production issues, and I’m only guessing based on my own vague knowledge of big blockbuster productions, plus, I’m illiterate when it comes to reading Mandarin-language media. Back in February at the height of the popularity of 3D technology earned from this year’s release of Cheng Pou-Soi’s Winter blockbuster, The Monkey King, that filmimg was reported to begin for the latest action adventure from director Zhao Tianyu titled, Zhong Kui: Snow Girl and the Dark Crystal. On Sunday in Shanghai, it was officially reported that Village Roadshow Pictures Asia and Warner Bros. Pictures have signed on as co-financiers for the film. Starring Painted Skin actor Chen Kun and Transformers 4 co-star Li BingBing, the film is a mainland production that centers on the titular anti-hero, a young man with mysterious powers charged with capturing wayward spirits and keeping order in the afterlife, battling interdimensional evil between heaven, hell, and the world of the living. We can officially count today out following a press conference at a Shaolin temple in China’s Henan Province that a new 85-minute 3D-animated kung fu feature is in the works titled Shaolin Temple (with no relation to the 3D remake of the Jet Li classic that was announced back in January). Following an earlier report on Friday stemming from several tweets and conceptual art samples, Chinese media forwarded new reports of the new film, now known as Feng Shen Bang. News of the film grew traction earlier on with at least two photos of concept art illustrating actor Jet Li and actress Shu Qi in their respective roles. Like the previous trailers we have seen, including the French international teaser, the footage is mostly more of the same, but is edited with Korean subtitles. What is interesting to me so far is the distinct possibility that Storm Shadow, played by Byung-hun Lee could be siding with the heroes this time around, after his last appearance in the first film. Other than that, I am open to seeing how the film plays out when it hits theaters on its new release date, March 29, 2013, since the pushback of post-production to include 3D conversion, among other reasons.
