Jesse V. Johnson loves cinema. Working in various levels of film productions since the early 1990s, the English-born filmmaker first made his name as a stunt performer working on such high profile projects as the original TOTAL RECALL, STARSHIP TROOPERS, WAR OF THE WORLDS, and dozens more. This led to Johnson being a stunt coordinator, a second unit director, and eventually an accomplished feature director. Staying true to his stunt background, the films Johnson has directed are action-packed affairs such as THE DEBT COLLECTOR, TRIPLE THREAT, and AVENGEMENT (to name just a few) that value practical effects and physical performers more than expensive CGI-laden spectacle. And throughout his constant climb to get where he is today, recognized as one of the strongest voices in action filmmaking among people who truly value that genre, he has never lost that love of cinema. This fact is abundantly clear when looking at his […]
Well this sounds exciting. Actor Dev Patel may have fallen short of his action star posterity with a certain live-action adaptation of a Nickleodeon IP, but that hasn’t hindered his favor since breaking through nearly a decade ago with Slumdog Millionaire. Nor does that change the fact that he’s a first-dan black belt in TaeKwonDo and if he’s been keeping up the craft, that ought to make him an action star contender in his own right. Indeed, the star of Neill Blomkamp’s Chappie and Garth Davis’ 2016 drama, Lion, is pivoting toward directing with his own debut, Monkey Man. Trade news has all but confirmed that Patel will both direct and star in the project for which Endeavor Content will be on hand at the American Film Market through next week to rep worldwide sales on and present to buyers. As Brian Welk of The Wrap notes, Patel developed the […]
Oscar-winning actrees Halle Berry (Monster’s Ball, Kidnap) is making 2019 her banner year with the March production of MMA drama, Bruised. Berry will star as well as make her directorial debut according to an exclusive by Amanda N’Duka at Deadline on Tuesday. Michelle Rosenfarb penned the script which will see Berry play the role of Jackie “Justice”, a disgraced former MMA fighter who must now conquer her demons to face one of the sport’s fiercest rising stars if she is to win back Manny, the son she walked out on when he was six. The news comes a little over a year and change when actress Blake Lively was tapped to star for director Nick Cassavetes months prior to the production of Reed Morano’s action thriller, The Rhythm Section. Lively reportedly injured her hand in December of last year, with production resuming this past summer. That film arrives on February […]
Deadline’s exclusive this week writes that Bob Odenkirk (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul) is readying a new action thriller with STXfilms and Hollywood film production and action company 87Eleven. Nobody is the name of the project and has Odenkirk joined by Marc Provissiero through their Odenkirk-Provissiero production banner along with Braden Aftergood producing, and Derek Kolstad scripting. The story follows a man who comes to the defense of a woman being harassed by thugs, only to learn later that one of the men he put in the hospital is the brother of a drug kingpin, now out for vengeance. Kolstad, whose already full plate in the past year currently consists of a third upcoming installment to the current John Wick film franchise along with television spin-off, The Continental, as well as The Steward for Cristal Pictures and a Hitman series at Fox 21 and Hulu, will also executive produce. 87Eleven’s […]
With Hollywood action and stunt training facility 87eleven becoming more prolific in the last several years in film production, expect more to come from the outlet as they now have officially paired with actor Gerard Butler for the new action adventure thriller, Snow Ponies. Friday’s announcement hails the directorial debut of Darrin Prescott whose electric 20+ year career in stunt work has since escalated him into second unit direction with projects such as Drive (2011), Captain America: Civil War (2016), the 87eleven-produced 2014 hit thriller, John Wick, as well as its forthcoming sequel from director Chad Stahelski. Snow Ponies is based on a 2006 Blacklist script by Pat Healy in which Butler leads the story of seven hardened men trekking across a vicious landscape to deliver a mysterious package only to have their mettle tested to the extreme. With murderous bandits stalking them and brutal obstacles at every turn, they […]
…That is the question, and it’s a pretty simple one, although very, VERY little is being willfully said about it since its conception earlier on. For now though, what we can go by is the information currently on display at its official Facebook page, including key names and companies, a very slow feed of stills, and a description that goes a little something like this: “THRONE” is the an epic, action-adventure film from Halvon Corps. Entertainment, PMV Entertainment (“JumpStart the Movie”), and the producers who brought you “Violence” and “Insecurity”! “THRONE” has an insanely talented international cast and crew led by Aaron Toney (“Gaurdians of the Galaxy”), James Young (“Captain America: The Winter Soldier”), & Brendon Huor (“Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”). And it features the amazingly creative talents from EpicRival, Thousand Pounds Action Company, LBP Stunts Chicago, 87Eleven Action Design, EMC Monkeys, & Flow (just to name a few)! Stay […]

With word of the new posters this week comes the action packed international trailer for director James Mangold‘s new film from 20th Century Fox, The Wolverine. Prior to the botched release of the trailer came increments of teaser footage for the trailer that lasted anywhere from 6 seconds to 20 seconds, which director James Mangold ended up having to apologize for. Not to mention the headache adding to the frustration behind Vine reels in the first place, which to me is a bit of a c***tease in the first place, and so that’s partly why I don’t blog about Vine clips for trailers when I would rather just put my energy into sharing all the goods. By the way, if you haven’t looked at the mini-teasers yet, then congratulations! You are a master now! 🙂 The film features actor Hugh Jackman reprising the title role following up the four previous […]
Deadline recently reported that the upcoming Michael Bay-produced and Jonathan Libesman-directed reboot of NINJA TURTLES has had its release date pushed a month back from May 16, 2014 to June 6, 2014. No word yet on who will be cast in the film other than that of Megan Fox, who will portray April O’Neil in the film, which came as a shock to many just a few years after Bay and Fox fell out upon the release of Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen. The film will be based on a screenplay by Josh Applebaum, with production assistance from the original creators of the TMNT franchise, Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. Stuntman, stunt coordinator, actor and fight choreographer David Leitch will be in charge with directing the action sequences along with stunt group, 87Eleven.
