It’s arguable that not a lot can really be generally said from an opinion point-of-view about director Ding Sheng’s take on the latest heroic bloodshed reimagining, A Better Tomorrow, unless anyone’s seen the film in full; I’m not really sure myself that it’s remake in the usual sense but the director hasn’t really disappointed me in the past. Thus, while reapproaching a classic John Woo property may be frowned upon, time will tell of this treatment pans out or not. For now though, while the intial teaser from last year wasn’t much to go on, the latest official trailer seems to delve into the narrative more accordingly ahead of its U.S. limited open on January 19. A former drug smuggler attempts to start his life anew and repair his relationship with his estranged brother, who is an up-and-coming star in the police department’s narcotics division. Darren Wang, Wang Kai and […]
I’m a little hard pressed to believe the latest teaser for Ding Sheng’s A Better Tomorrow inspires anything more than some mild curiousity. Then again, it is just a teaser and the man who brought us three of Jackie Chan’s biggest films does certainly have the capacity to be hard-hitting with a touch of tragic heroism to boot – a fact somewhat notable in Police Story: Lockdown. Does it make him the next John Woo? I digress, but he’s taken himself to task with a cast that aims to echo such tropes inspired by Woo’s signature 1986 crime thriller starring Ti Lung and Leslie Cheung with actor Chow Yun-Fat earning himself a prominent spotlight. The film also earned a few sequels before Sanjay Gupta’s Hindi remake in 1994, and another rsmake measuring pretty measuring pretty well in 2010 from Song Hae-Sung. A former drug smuggler attempts to start his life […]
Filmmaker John Woo is back in the limelight in recent months, and for good reasons aplenty in the wake of his latest international production launch, Manhunt, a remake of Sato Junya’s 1976 thriller now slated for 2017. Since then, at least one other helmer circulating his work is actor Stephen Fung who is currently up to direct a remake of Woo’s 1991 heist action comedy, Once A Thief, which also piles onto his previous efforts at another Woo title, the 1986 Hong Kong cinema classic, A Better Tomorrow. The film, starring Ti Lung, Leslie Cheung and Waise Lee with a prolific performance by Chow Yun Fat, centers on the upheaval between a Triad big brother in the counterfeiting business, and his beleagured younger brother on the police force. What ensues is a thrilling crime drama that reunites old friends, double-crossed and reduced to their own lesser states, for a mission […]
Internationally acclaimed filmmaker John Woo is quite expressive nowadays regarding his hopes of reinvigorating his old partnership with fellow film legend Tsui Hark, years after lighting the Hong Kong action genre for the world to see with the 1986 smash hit, A Better Tomorrow. Two more films within that franchise followed apart as the two parted ways years later (with the Korean remake of the first film arriving in 2010), and with Woo wanting to build that bridge, it would certainly revive the glory days for fans longing to see another masterpiece from the famous duo. Fortunately such admirers also happen to represent 181-year old Swiss watch brand and manufacturers, Jaeger-LeCoultre who took to this year’s events at the 17th annual Shanghai International Film Festival to auction off their products to help fund the 4K restoration of up to nine classic Chinese films since the two parties partnered in 2011.
