In a nutshell, this should have been a story of a girl who wanted power for herself and no one else. It would have made for a better story. Instead, we’re given a miasma of history from the introduction of the Knights Templar being buried with a stone from the hilt of an Ancient Egyptian dagger that was used in a magical ceremony by the Mummy herself (Sofia Boutella) and our cast of characters bent on its destruction. The June 9 release of Alex Kurtzman’s The Mummy isn’t coming light this summer. The film, as per the efforts of past several years is just one in several forthcoming steps toward what Universal Pictures, on Monday, branded as the Dark Universe, spearheaded by Kurtzman and The Fate Of The Furious scribe Chris Morgan in a sequential effort to adapt classic cinematic icons of the studio for the big screen. Amid the electricity and hype during CinemaCon came talk that actress Sofia Boutella intially chose not to play the title role of director/producer Alex Kurtzmann’s reboot of The Mummy. Rather, she had to be talked into it and for what it’s worth and as far as trailers are concerned, I’m pretty pleased with the result. Boutella’s presence now aims to help set a course for the studio’s efforts in growing a fresh new cinematic monster universe that will later add The Wolfman, Van Helsing, Bride Of Frankestein and more. It’s been ten years since Marvel villain, Venom, went toe-to-toe with Spider-Man in a movie. Spin-off efforts then underwent a series of gymnastic developments while in limbo and needless to say I won’t get too much into the convoluted history that occurs thereafter. That said, about a year after The Amazing Spider-Man 2, it was finally announced that Marvel would help Sony get itself together with this particular IP in lieu of everything happening with the MCU leading up to Avengers: Infinity War. The 1999 Stephen Sommers-directed The Mummy, and its sequel in 2001 are still two of the most fun and memorable swashbuckling action adventure flicks ever made. Both were award-winning with numerous nominations to their credit preceding the third which faltered, critically, but still managed to garner interest for a fourth film until about four years ago. Sofia Boutella Is Up To Star As THE MUMMY For Universal

Following news of actor Tom Cruise‘s talks to join Universal Pictures’s upcoming reboot of The Mummy, THR now has word that actress and dancer Sofia Boutella is now in talks for the title role. Chris Morgan and Sean Daniel set to produce the film with Alex Kurtzman who is set to direct from a script by Jon Sphaits. The film marks the first of few moves in recent years for Universal Pictures to gather together its slate for a sprawling monster movieverse which will also feature Dracula by way of Evans’s role in Dracula Untold (2014), The Invisible Man, Bride Of Frankenstein, Van Helsing and The Wolfman. CBS Is Bringing Back STAR TREK!

I can’t remember off the top of my head how long it’s been since Star Trek was on the small screen, but we’ve had several versions of this amazing and phenomenal show for several decades, and with the cult following it has, it’s no surprise that viewers are eager for more. Yes, another film is lined up for next year, but CBS is rebooting the show entirely for a January 2017 premiere which will head to television and stream through the network’s on-demamd service, CBS All Access. Alex Kurtzman is executive producing the new show which will boldly go and explore new life and new civilizations…though I am curious to see what will stick around and what won’t as far as Romulans and Klingons are concerned. Tuesday night saw the season one finale of El Rey Network’s prequel television show, From Dusk Til Dawn: The Series.
