In what is a masterstroke of collaborative genius, director Ridley Scott teams helms the latest biographical piece on one of history’s most prolific and successful leaders, with Joaquin Phoenix in the titular role. The size and scale of the film is evident in the large scale battles, with evidently no expense spared in these gigantic wars. But ultimately, the trailer highlights the interpersonal relationship between the French leader and Josephine (Vanessa Kirby) as the linchpin and key narrative device. The versatility of Scott is undeniable with a suite of films that are as diverse as Phoenix’ own film catalogue, but far more extensive from ALIEN (1979), BLADE RUNNER (1982) and BLACK RAIN (1989), to BLACK HAWK DOWN (2001) and PROMETHEUS (2012) – this is yet a another demonstration of his broad expertise in modern cinema. Given that this film is clearly a character study, as much as it is a […]
Apple TV+ subscribers looking to fly Air Idris next month needn’t look further than the new hostage thriller series, Hijack. Indeed it’s Idris Elba front and center doling out the heroics shepherded by creators George Kay (“Lupin,” “Criminal”) and Jim Field Smith (“Criminal,” “Truth Seekers”) who also directed the show. Told in real time, “Hijack” is a tense thriller that follows the journey of a hijacked plane as it makes its way to London over a seven hour flight, and authorities on the ground scramble for answers. Elba will star as ‘Sam Nelson,’ an accomplished negotiator in the business world who needs to step up and use all his guile to try and save the lives of the passengers — but, his high-risk strategy could be his undoing. Panjabi will play the role of ‘Zahra Gahfoor,’ a counter terrorism officer who is on the ground when the plane is hijacked […]
The Gray Man and Knives Out cohorts Chris Evans and Ana de Armas are back at it again this time with Ghosted, the new action adventure comedy director Dexter Fletcher. The film is streaming exclusively on Apple TV+ and the company just launched its trailer on Monday. Salt-of-the-earth Cole (Evans) falls head over heels for enigmatic Sadie (de Armas)—but then makes the shocking discovery that she’s a secret agent. Before they can decide on a second date, Cole and Sadie are swept away on an international adventure to save the world. I was actually surprised and impressed by how good this looks. If you’re eager to add to another action-packed viewing experience with de Armas front and center ahead of John Wick fan aspirations with Len Wiseman’s Ballerina, I think this is pretty opportune. It’s also got Street Fighter: Assassin Fist actor Mike Moh in the mix as well, which […]
Ask director Jon S. Baird and he’ll probably tell you that for the engineers of the classic Gameboy mainstay Tetris, the Cold War was a different kind of playing field. Thus, judging by the official trailer, I think Baird’s found a way to observe this angle almost perfectly, and you’re invited to check it out now at the bottom of the page. “Tetris” tells the unbelievable story of how one of the world’s most popular video games found its way to avid players around the globe. Henk Rogers (Taron Egerton) discovers TETRIS in 1988, and then risks everything by traveling to the Soviet Union, where he joins forces with inventor Alexey Pajitnov (Nikita Efremov) to bring the game to the masses. Based on a true story, “Tetris” is a Cold War–era thriller on steroids, with double-crossing villains, unlikely heroes and a nail-biting race to the finish. Egerton and Efremov lead […]
Apple TV+ is revving up its engines for a new live-action televised take on Tatsuo Yoshida’s 1960s manga IP, Speed Racer. Multiple trade sources are discussing the series and there’s word that J.J. Abrams will exec produce the series via his Bad Robot banner, with Hiram Martinez (Snowpiercer, Get Shorty) co-writing and serving as showrunner. Plot details on the show are unknown. However, THR notes the show had been in the works for years under Abrams label in a deal with Warner’s TV division, and that the rights holders at Tatsunoko are “believed to have blessed” the new series version Apple is working on. The show will mark the latest move to live action since the Wachowskis’ adapted it for the big screen in 2008 at Warner Bros. with actor Emile Hirsch starring in the title role. The film ultimately bombed at the box office but still stands with cult […]

Told in real time, “Hijack” is a tense thriller that follows the journey of a hijacked plane as it makes its way to London over a seven hour flight, as authorities on the ground scramble for answers. George Kay (Criminal, Netflix’s “Lupin”) is writing the series, and Jim Field Smith (Criminal, The Wrong Mans) is attached to direct. The two are also exec producing via their Idiotlamp Productions […]

Having earned their audience acclaim with Marvel’s movie franchises in the last seven years, directing duo Joe and Anthony Russo have since garnered plenty of clout as a producing powerhouse for hit films to this day. They’ve also managed to vie for other creative endeavors, including smaller scale dramatic crime opus, Cherry, after attaining the rights to Nico Walker’s best-selling novel. Casting Tom Holland (Spider-Man, Marvel’s MCU) and Ciara Bravo (Wayne, Small Engine Repair), the film now has an official trailer leaning delightfully into some fourth wall-breaking moments amidst the narrative. Cherry (Tom Holland) drifts from college dropout to army medic in Iraq—anchored only by his one true love, Emily (Ciara Bravo). But after returning from the war with PTSD, his life spirals into drugs and crime as he struggles to find his place in the world. Cherry will release in select theaters on February 26, and an exclusive run […]
It wasn’t that long ago that a fan film began stirring about to help bring cult comic book favorite, El Gato Negro, to the mainstream. The beloved crimefighting luchadore, created by Richard Dominguez, is gaining a lot more traction these days having gotten attention from TV producers for a hopeful series. That vision, since circling upcoming Terminator: Dark Fate actor Diego Boneta, is taking on some new life now at Apple TV+ with Robert Rodriguez set to direct and exec produce for MGM Television. Boneta, who will also exec produce via his Three Amigos banner, will debut the character for the first time since Dominguez birthed the comic franchise in 1993. That incarnation explored the trevails of a legendary Mexican wrestler who also applied his skills to thwart crime while Dominguez’s 2004 focused on a Texas social worker’s search for vengeance under his grandfather’s nom de guerre. I’ve yet to […]
