ASSASSIN’S CREED: Netflix Moves Forward With Live-Action Series Adaptation Of The Hit Game

With Justin Kurzel’s own attempt in 2016 long since past, the honor is now in the hands of Netflix as of Tuesday’s announcement for a live-action treatment, in an agreement with Ubisoft for Assassin’s Creed. Billed as “an epic, genre-bending live action adaptation”, Ubisoft Film & Television’s Jason Altman and Danielle Kreinik will serve as executive producers on the project. The search has already begun for a showrunner that can help “tap into the iconic video game’s trove of dynamic stories with global mass appeal for adaptations of live action, animated, and anime series.” Michael Fassbender led the charge for Kurzel’s own adaptation, inspired by the hit game franchise which first launched to fruition in 2007, selling 155 million games worldwide. I don’t have much of an opinion on director Justin Kurzel’s latest live-action video game film treatment, Assassin’s Creed. Really, I’m just looking forward to the film, although I am fascinated by the prospect of deciphering between what shots are practical and CG-generated with a blue screen, as quite a few of these stunts were captured on set video in earlier BTS clips. Point in fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if they were all at their most practical in capacity. The internet is ripe with freerunning videos full of practically-performed, raw and death-defying stuntwork and there’s no question that the team on this film has done its fair share of dynamic stuntwork in this regard. Director Tim Miller’s hit movie, Deadpool, won in epic fashion last weekend at the MTV movie awards, taking away accolades for Best Comedy and Best Fight – this all following its prime box office victory in becoming the highest grossing R-rated superhero movie, ever. Now that enough time has passed and all other business is in order, production is finally underway for the film’s forthcoming release courtesy of New Regency Pictures and distributor 20th Century Fox. Actor Michael Fassbender, reportedly on deck to return as Magneto for next year’s release of Bryan Singer’s X-Men: Apocalypse, is set to lead the film with Justin Kurzel directing.
